Does your car have hydraulic power steering?
Power steering additives only work in hydraulic systems. If your car has electric power steering, there is no fluid in the steering system and an additive is simply not applicable. Check your owner's manual or look under the bonnet for the signs below.

- Electric power steering (EPS): No pump, no power steering fluid reservoir. There is no fluid to treat, so a power steering additive is not suitable for your car.
- Electro-hydraulic steering: There is a reservoir and fluid, but the system may use an OEM-specific hydraulic fluid. Check the reservoir cap and your owner's manual. If either states "no additives," do not use one.

What can a power steering additive fix, and what can it not?
A power steering additive works by conditioning seals, improving lubrication within the pump and rack, and reducing foam and cavitation in the fluid. The result is a more stable fluid that is gentler on aging components. It is a maintenance aid, not a repair product, and the distinction matters.
Works for:
- Light whining or groaning noise, especially at cold start or when turning to full lock, in an otherwise functioning hydraulic system
- Minor seepage from steering rack or pump seals, where fluid loss is slow and there are no puddles forming under the car
- Slightly inconsistent or heavier steering feel in an aging hydraulic system that is still safe to drive
- Preventive conditioning of seals and fluid in a hydraulic system with higher mileage or fluid that has not been changed in several years
Does not work for:
- Sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening steering problems, such as very heavy steering that comes on quickly
- Large leaks or visible puddles of fluid under the car, or a reservoir level that drops noticeably within days
- Metallic grinding, clunking, or strong knocking noises from the steering system
- Worn-out pumps with metal-on-metal contact
- Split hoses, cracked housings, or damaged pipes
- Any situation where steering safety is already compromised
A power steering additive does not replace a worn pump, a damaged rack, or a split hose. If your symptoms fall into the second list, the right step is a garage visit, not a bottle of treatment.
How do you use a power steering additive, and how much?
The process is straightforward, but the order of steps matters.
- Confirm that your steering system is hydraulic and that the fluid type in your reservoir matches what is listed on the product label.
- With the engine off and the car on level ground, check that the fluid level in the reservoir sits between the MIN and MAX markings.
- Pour the additive directly into the reservoir on top of the existing fluid. You do not need to remove fluid first, as long as the total level stays within the MIN-MAX range after adding the product.
- Replace the reservoir cap, start the engine, and slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times so the additive circulates through the system.
- After a day of normal driving, check the fluid level again and top up with the correct fluid type if needed, without exceeding the MAX mark.

- After adding the additive, noise, leaking, or heavy steering does not improve within a few weeks, or symptoms get worse
If symptoms worsen after adding the product, such as more noise, heavier steering, or visible foaming in the reservoir, stop driving and contact a garage. At that point the issue is mechanical and beyond what a fluid treatment can address. Serious mechanical wear ultimately requires component replacement, not further additives.

Fluid compatibility: check before you add
Before adding any power steering additive, check your owner's manual and the reservoir cap for the specified fluid type. Many power steering additives are compatible with ATF-based fluids and standard dedicated power steering fluids, but they are not automatically compatible with all OEM-specific hydraulic fluids, including certain CHF types used in some European vehicles. If your manual or reservoir cap states "no additives," do not use a power steering additive. Doing so may affect your warranty coverage on the steering system.
On dosage: using more than the recommended amount can alter fluid properties outside the design range. Follow the label, and do not combine multiple different additives in the same system.
