What Multi Spray is for, and what it is not

Multi Spray is a general-purpose lubricant spray for light mechanical maintenance. It works in a similar way to a WD-type spray: it penetrates, lubricates, and displaces moisture. The difference between product types becomes clearer when you look at how often a part moves and how much load it carries. More on that in the section on limits below. One thing to keep in mind: Multi Spray leaves a thin oily film that offers short-term moisture protection, but that film can attract dust and road grime if you apply too much. Short bursts and wiping off the excess are the right approach.

It handles:

  • Squeaking door, bonnet, and boot hinges
  • Lightly stuck locks and key barrels
  • Stuck bolts and nuts with light surface rust
  • Cables and linkages on cars and bicycles
  • Number plate screws, small brackets, and exposed metal fixings
  • Light moisture displacement on small metal parts
  • Short-term surface protection against moisture and light corrosion

It does not handle:

  • Deep or structural rust and corrosion
  • Worn or noisy fans, belts, bearings, or suspension parts
  • Brake components (discs, pads, calipers) and tyres
  • Fuel systems, engine internals, or coolant circuits
  • Long-term underbody rust protection (that requires proper rust treatment)
  • A permanent fix for squeaking hinges in poor condition: it helps temporarily, not indefinitely
  • Rubber door seals and certain plastics (a spray formulated for rubber is the safer choice there; see the compatibility section below)

Where to use it on your car, bike, or tools

The list below shows common situations and whether Multi Spray is the right fit. Each entry is meant to give you a quick answer without having to read through paragraphs of text.

Suitable:

  • Squeaking car door hinge: a short burst on the hinge joint, then open and close the door a few times to work the product in
  • Stiff bonnet or boot hinge: treat the hinge points lightly once or twice a year
  • Stuck bonnet latch or lock mechanism: light spray on the moving metal parts; avoid spraying the surrounding paint
  • Stiff car lock or key barrel: a small amount inside the lock, wipe any overspray; if it keeps sticking after treatment, have a garage check it
  • Rusty number plate screws: spray, let it soak, then loosen carefully (see the step-by-step in the next section)
  • Lightly rusted underbody bolts you want to loosen: use as a penetrating aid, not as a rust treatment
  • Sunroof mechanism (metal pivot points and rails only): light spray on exposed metal parts; avoid the rubber seals around the glass
  • Window regulator mechanisms (metal parts only): suitable for a light spray on exposed guides and pivot points
  • Moving parts on your bicycle such as cables, derailleurs, and pedal mechanisms: suitable for light lubrication; for the chain itself, chain oil is better suited to long-term outdoor use
  • Garage tools and workshop equipment (pliers, hinges, locks): a quick maintenance spray keeps them moving freely
  • Classic cars and older vehicles with more exposed metal: suitable for hinges, locks, and fixings, though rust and structural wear still need proper treatment

Avoid here:

  • Brake discs, pads, and drums: lubricant on braking surfaces is a safety risk
  • Tyre tread and wheel braking surfaces
  • Rubber seals and weatherstripping: prolonged use can cause softening or swelling over time; use a spray formulated for rubber instead
  • Visible painted panels and interior plastics: wipe off any accidental overspray immediately
  • Drive belts (auxiliary belt, timing belt) and critical suspension or steering components: these require a garage, not a spray

When you need longer-lasting lubrication:

If your hinges, gears, or bearings move very frequently and a light film from Multi Spray wears off too quickly between services, a PTFE spray is more suitable. For that type of use, the Lindemann PTFE Universal Spray 300ML provides a longer-lasting lubrication film that holds up better under regular friction.

Is multi spray safe on rubber, plastic, and paint?

Rubber seals and weatherstripping

Most general-purpose multi sprays are not formulated for rubber. Regular use on rubber door seals and weatherstripping can cause softening or swelling over time, which shortens the life of the seal. For protecting rubber in winter, a spray formulated for rubber is the safer choice. Use Multi Spray on the nearby metal hinge or lock mechanism, but keep it off the rubber itself.

Plastic trim and painted surfaces

Accidental light overspray on paint or plastic trim is usually not immediately harmful if you wipe it off quickly with a clean cloth. Left in place, the oily film can cause dull spots, attract dirt, or stain certain plastics. Spray Multi Spray directly on the metal part you are treating, not broadly over the surrounding bodywork. If you notice any change in appearance on a plastic surface, stop using the product there.

Electrical contacts, EV and hybrid components

Only use Multi Spray on electrical contacts if the product label explicitly states it is contact-safe. Otherwise, treat electrical contact use as not suitable. Around charging ports, high-voltage connectors, and EV or hybrid-specific components, maintenance is best left to a garage. In the engine bay, light use on metal clips and hinges is fine when the engine is fully cool, but keep the spray away from sensors, belts, and anything near high-voltage wiring. Correct use on standard hinges and locks does not normally affect a manufacturer's warranty, but work on safety-critical or high-voltage parts should always be done by a professional. When in doubt about a material, test Multi Spray on a hidden spot first and only continue if there is no visible change.

How to use it, and how often

Freeing a rusty or stuck bolt: step by step

  1. Spray a short burst directly on the bolt, the nut, and the area where they meet. Use the straw nozzle to aim closely and reduce overspray on surrounding surfaces.
  2. Let the spray soak for at least 5 to 10 minutes so it can work into the threads.
  3. Try to loosen the bolt carefully. If it does not move, repeat the spray, wait again, and try once more.
  4. Once the bolt moves, wipe off any excess spray from the surrounding area to reduce dirt build-up.
  5. If the bolt remains seized after a few attempts, or the rust looks severe, let a garage handle it. Forcing a heavily corroded fastener risks damaging the thread or the part it holds.

How often to reapply

  • Car door hinges: once or twice a year, and after a thorough wash if they start to squeak
  • Bonnet and boot hinges: once or twice a year, or before winter if the car is regularly exposed to road salt
  • Locks and key barrels: only when they start to feel stiff; avoid frequent heavy applications
  • Exposed underbody bolts and number plate screws: a light spray after installation, and again after a harsh winter if you notice stiffness or light rust
  • Bicycle moving parts (excluding the chain): as needed when movement becomes stiff; for chains, use dedicated chain oil

Apply only a thin layer in short bursts. A long, heavy spray leaves a wet film that attracts dust and road grime. Always wipe off the excess with a cloth after working the part a few times. When Multi Spray is not enough

Multi Spray is meant for light, everyday nuisances: squeaks, mild stiffness, light surface rust, and short-term protection. It does not stop existing rust, repair worn bearings, or resolve deeper mechanical faults. If a noise or stiffness returns quickly after one or two treatments, the underlying part is likely worn or damaged, not just in need of lubrication.

If your situation is X, use this instead:

  • Parts under regular friction such as gears, bearings, and frequently used hinges where you want longer-lasting lubrication: use a PTFE spray, for example the Lindemann PTFE Universal Spray 300ML
  • Heavy-load lubrication in joints or bearings: use grease or assembly paste, not Multi Spray
  • Rubber seals, weatherstripping, and rubber-to-metal contact points: use a spray formulated for rubber surfaces
  • A bolt that is severely rusted and will not move even after soaking: penetrating oil or professional help is safer than repeated spraying
  • A bicycle chain: use chain oil, which is designed to stay in place under outdoor conditions and resist washing off
  • A squeaking fan, blower motor, or auxiliary belt: do not spray these parts. Persistent noise from a fan or belt is a sign of wear or a mechanical fault, not a lubrication problem. That is a garage job.

If a squeak, stiffness, or noise does not improve after one or two treatments with Multi Spray, or returns quickly, it is time to let a garage inspect the part rather than spraying again. Persistent noises from wheel bearings, suspension components, or the steering system, and parts that feel uneven or difficult to move, are signs that a mechanic needs to assess the situation. Safety: what to avoid

  • Most aerosol lubricant sprays are flammable. Do not spray near hot exhausts, turbos, or engine parts, and never on or near a running engine. Allow the engine to cool fully before applying spray in the engine bay.
  • Always work in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling spray mist.
  • If you accidentally spray Multi Spray on a brake disc, pad, or tyre, do not drive the vehicle. Clean the affected surface thoroughly with brake cleaner or a degreaser and only drive once the surface is completely dry. Lubricant on braking surfaces significantly reduces stopping power and is a direct safety risk.
  • Keep Multi Spray away from open flames, sparks, and hot surfaces while using it.
  • Store the can upright, at room temperature, and keep it out of reach of children.
