Do you drive petrol or diesel?

Your fuel type is the first filter. Petrol and diesel additives are formulated differently and are not interchangeable. Using a diesel product in a petrol engine, or the other way around, is not recommended and can produce unpredictable results.

Petrol engine

Petrol additives cover fuel system cleaning, injector and valve deposit removal, catalytic converter maintenance, and fuel protection during storage. Modern petrol engines, including direct-injection types (GDI, TSI, TFSI), benefit from periodic cleaning because intake valve deposits are a known issue in these designs. Petrol hybrids that use a combustion engine alongside an electric motor can generally use compatible petrol fuel additives, but check the product label to confirm suitability for your specific setup. LPG and tuning products are not covered here.

Diesel engine

Diesel additives address injector fouling, DPF loading, EGR deposits, black smoke, and fuel quality support. They are generally suitable for modern common-rail diesel engines and Euro 6 vehicles. How often, and how much?

Getting the dosage and frequency right matters as much as choosing the correct product. More is not better: overdosing a fuel additive increases the risk of residue or ash reaching sensitive emission components, which can worsen the very problem you are trying to solve.

Fuel additives (petrol and diesel)

  • Use at the dosage stated on the label. Follow the packaging, as bottle sizes and tank volumes vary by product.
  • For injector and system cleaners, periodic use is a sensible maintenance approach for most drivers. Using one at every fill-up adds no benefit and is unnecessary.
  • Add the product to the tank according to the instructions on the label.
  • Drive normally after treatment. Cleaning effects are not immediate. Expect smoother combustion and slightly cleaner running, not a dramatic power change.

Oil system cleaner / engine flush

  • Add to the old oil before an oil change, not to fresh oil already in the engine.
  • Run the engine at idle for the time specified on the label, then drain the old oil immediately. Change the filter and refill with fresh oil as normal.
  • Do not drive the car between adding the flush and draining the oil.

Combining additives

Using two fuel additives in the same tank is not recommended. Solvent concentrations can overlap and the combined effect is unpredictable. Use one product at a time and follow the dosage on the label.

What additives do not fix

Additives are maintenance products. There are situations where reaching for a bottle is the wrong first move.

An additive is not the answer for:

  • Mechanical damage to engine components
  • Cracked or broken housings, seals, or parts
  • Persistent fault codes or warning lights
  • Heavy or continuous smoke from the exhaust
  • Strong knocking or metallic engine noise
  • Significant or rapid oil loss
  • Major power loss that is clearly not deposit-related

Some concrete situations where a garage is the right first step:

If your engine is knocking loudly or making metallic noises, stop driving and have it diagnosed. No additive addresses internal mechanical wear of that kind, and continuing to drive risks serious damage.

If your DPF warning light stays on after a proper motorway drive cycle, the filter may be beyond what a cleaning additive can address. A garage can assess whether professional regeneration, cleaning, or replacement is needed. A DPF cleaner additive is only useful for early-stage soot loading, not a DPF that is physically saturated, cracked, or triggering a fault from a failed sensor.

If oil loss is fast or clearly visible under the car, an oil leak stop additive is not a substitute for repair. It can help with minor seepage at an aging gasket or shaft seal, but it will not seal a cracked housing or a failed head gasket.

If your car fails an emissions test, the cause matters. A cleaning additive may help if the issue is light deposit build-up on a system that is otherwise working correctly. If the failure is caused by a faulty sensor, a damaged catalytic converter, or a hardware fault, an additive will not resolve it. A diagnostic check first is the more reliable route.

Preventive use, storage, and short trips

If your car runs well and you follow the manufacturer's service schedule, additives are not mandatory. That said, they can add genuine value in specific situations. If you use decent fuel and service the car on time, a periodic system cleaner is a sensible extra step, not a cure for poor maintenance habits.

Short city trips and frequent stop-start driving make deposit build-up more likely, because the engine may not reach full operating temperature consistently. This is particularly relevant for diesel drivers: a diesel that rarely gets a sustained run at speed is more prone to DPF loading and EGR fouling. A periodic cleaning additive suited to your fuel type can slow that process. It is not a substitute for the occasional longer drive, which remains the most effective way to keep a diesel's emission systems in good shape.

Frequently asked questions

Can additives void my car's warranty?

Fuel system additives added to the tank generally do not affect manufacturer warranty when used as directed. Oil additives are a different matter: some manufacturers specify that adding anything beyond the factory-recommended oil is not advised, which can complicate warranty claims. If your car is still under warranty, check your vehicle handbook before using any oil additive.

Are fuel additives safe for DPF, GPF, and catalytic converter systems?

Fuel additives formulated for passenger cars are generally safe for these emission systems when used at the correct dose. Overdosing is the main risk: too much product can increase ash or residue reaching the filter, which can make clogging worse rather than better. Follow the label dosage and do not combine products in the same tank.

Are fuel additives safe for hybrid cars?
