Is ethanol treatment necessary for your car?

If you drive daily on E10, your car is modern and approved for it, and it never stands still for more than a week, ethanol treatment is not strictly necessary. It is a sensible precaution, not a universal must-have. That said, ethanol in petrol absorbs moisture from the air, accelerates corrosion in metal fuel system parts, and can stress rubber seals and hoses over time. In certain situations, those risks are high enough to make regular treatment a worthwhile habit.

Ethanol treatment makes most sense if:

  • Your car stands still for weeks or months with E10 in the tank.
  • You mainly drive short city trips with little long-distance or motorway driving.
  • Your car is older and was not originally designed around ethanol blends.
  • You are switching from mostly E5 to mostly E10 and want extra protection during the first few tanks.

What does ethanol treatment do, and what doesn't it do?

Knowing the limits of any additive is as important as knowing what it can do. Here is a clear breakdown.

What it does:

  • Helps disperse moisture that ethanol absorbs from the air, reducing the risk of phase separation in the tank.
  • Adds corrosion inhibitors that protect metal parts in the fuel system, including the tank, fuel lines, pump, and injectors.
  • Can slow the drying, swelling, or shrinking of certain rubber seals and hoses exposed to ethanol blends; it does not repair damage that has already occurred.
  • Supports more reliable starting and steadier idling after periods of standstill, by stabilising the treated fuel.
  • In formulations that include a fuel stabilizer function, helps keep petrol stable during long storage and makes the car easier to restart after months of standing.

What it does not do:

  • Does not remove ethanol from E10 or turn it into pure petrol.
  • Does not override your manufacturer's fuel approval; if your car is not approved for E10, an additive cannot change that.
  • Does not repair mechanical damage such as cracked hoses, leaking seals, worn pumps, or heavily corroded tanks. Those need a garage.
  • Is not a full fuel system cleaner; for heavy carbon deposits or injector fouling, a dedicated petrol cleaner or injector cleaner is the right product.
  • Is not an octane booster and is not a performance additive. Any effect on power or fuel consumption is small and not measurable in normal driving.
  • Does not fix a check-engine light caused by faults or sensor issues.

How to use ethanol treatment: dose, timing, and frequency

Application steps:

  1. Confirm you are adding the product to a petrol tank only, not diesel or any other system.
  2. Check the dosage on the packaging for your tank size and follow the label for the correct proportion.
  3. Pour the product into a nearly empty tank before you refuel, then fill up. The incoming petrol mixes the additive automatically.
  4. After filling up, drive in normal use so the treated fuel circulates through the fuel system.

Using more than the label recommends does not increase protection. At very high concentrations, excess additive can affect combustion or sensor readings. The safety margin at the correct dose is wide, but deliberately exceeding the maximum dose is not advisable.

Frequency:

  • Preventive use: for normal private driving on E10 without symptoms, use at regular intervals as indicated on the packaging. Using it in every tank is generally not necessary.
  • Corrective use (mild symptoms): if you notice rough idling or hesitant starting linked to E10 or a recent period of standing, use one full dose in a nearly empty tank before refuelling and drive in mixed use afterwards.   • Storage use: fill up with fresh petrol, add the recommended dose of an ethanol treatment that also includes a fuel stabilizer function, and park with a nearly full tank to minimise the air space and moisture that can enter. Which cars and engines is ethanol treatment suitable for?

Suitable for:

  • Modern Euro 5, Euro 6, and Euro 7 petrol engines, including direct injection (GDI) and turbocharged variants, provided the car is approved for E10 and you follow the recommended dosage.
  • Naturally aspirated older petrol engines, whether injection or carburettor, that are approved to run on E10 or E5.
  • Hybrid cars, for the petrol engine part only; the additive has no effect on the electric drive or battery system.
  • Passenger cars and light petrol vans that regularly use E10 and want added protection.
  • Seasonal or classic petrol vehicles that stand still for weeks or months with ethanol fuel in the tank, where the manufacturer allows E10.
  • Small petrol engines such as motorbikes, only where the product label explicitly states compatibility and you scale the dose to the smaller tank volume.

Not suitable for:

  • Diesel engines. Ethanol treatment is for petrol only.
  • LPG, CNG, and hydrogen drivetrains. These do not use ethanol in the same way.
  • Engines that the manufacturer has not approved for ethanol blends. The additive does not make E10 permissible where the manufacturer prohibits it.
  • Cars where misfueling has occurred. An additive cannot correct a wrong-fuel incident.
  • Any system other than the petrol tank. Do not add this product to oil, coolant, or any other fluid.
