What is dry lubricant spray suitable for?

Dry lubricant spray works on external moving parts where you want a clean, non-sticky film rather than a greasy or oily residue. The two columns below give you a quick answer on where it belongs and where it does not.

Suitable for

*Car:*

  • Squeaky car door hinges and stiff door locks where you want a non-greasy, dust-repellent result
  • Bonnet and tailgate latches that stick or creak
  • Seat rails and seat adjustment mechanisms that no longer slide smoothly
  • Window guides and sunroof tracks, where the manufacturer allows a dry-film lubricant
  • Interior sliding and pivoting parts where a greasy residue on trim would be unwanted

*Bike:*

  • Derailleurs and shifter pivot points in dry or dusty riding conditions, where wet chain oil would attract too much grime
  • Cable housings, where the inner cable needs to slide freely without picking up dust
  • Brake pivot points and other frame pivot points (not on braking surfaces or pads)

*Household and general:*

  • Door and gate hinges, drawer slides, and lock cylinders where a clean, dry surface is preferred
  • Light sliding rails and pivoting parts in furniture or storage

Not suitable for

  • Brake discs, drums, brake pads, or any braking surface: overspray here reduces friction and compromises safety
  • Tyre tread or any part of the tyre contact patch
  • Engine internals, gearboxes, power steering, fuel systems, or cooling systems
  • Heavily loaded bearings, CV joints, or wheel bearings where a proper grease is required
  • Seized or heavily rusted parts: a penetrating oil, rust treatment, or professional repair is the right first step there

Dry lubricant spray reduces friction and noise in parts that are still mechanically sound but moving poorly. It does not repair bent, cracked, or worn components, and it has no effect on engine performance, fuel consumption, or emissions.

Is dry lubricant spray safe on rubber, plastic, and painted surfaces?

Dry lubricant spray is broadly compatible with the materials you encounter on a car or bike, but a few conditions apply depending on the surface.

  • Steel and aluminium: Fully suitable. The spray leaves a thin, dry film on metal hinges, latches, and rails without staining or corroding the surface.
  • Engineering plastics (seat runners, interior trim housings, derailleur cages): Compatible with most automotive and bike plastics. On visually sensitive surfaces such as piano-black or gloss trim, test on a small, inconspicuous area first before applying near visible panels.
  • Rubber seals and grommets: Safe for incidental contact if you apply sparingly and do not soak the rubber. For maintaining large door seals or weatherstrips to keep them supple, a dedicated rubber care product is more appropriate. Dry lubricant spray is not a replacement for that.
  • Painted surfaces: Generally safe if overspray is wiped away promptly. Use the extension straw to keep the spray targeted, keep a cloth nearby, and avoid spraying directly onto visible bodywork. If a light film appears on paint, wipe it off while it is still fresh.

How to apply dry lubricant spray, and how much is enough?

Correct preparation and a light touch matter more than the amount of product you use.

  1. Clean the part first. Remove old grease, dirt, or rust residue with a suitable cleaner or degreaser, then let the surface dry completely. Applying dry lubricant over contaminated surfaces reduces its effectiveness and can trap debris inside the mechanism.
  2. Shake the can and fit the extension straw. Shake according to the instructions on the label. Attach the straw to the nozzle for precise, targeted application, especially in tight spaces like lock cylinders or derailleur pivot points.
  3. Apply a thin, even layer. For a single hinge, lock, or latch, one or two short bursts directed at the contact surfaces is enough. Focus on where parts move against each other. Using more product does not improve lubrication and can cause build-up that attracts dirt over time.
  4. Let the film dry. Wait until the layer is no longer wet or dripping before using the part. The dry film that remains is what does the work.
  5. Move the mechanism and wipe off any excess. Open and close the hinge, slide the seat rail, or actuate the derailleur a few times to distribute the film evenly. Wipe visible overspray from plastic or painted surfaces with a clean cloth, while leaving the contact surfaces lightly coated.

Some dry lubricant sprays leave a light, sometimes whitish or matte film when they dry. On hidden mechanisms this is normal and not a problem. On visible surfaces, simply wipe away what you can see, as long as the moving contact surfaces themselves remain covered.

How often should you reapply?

Reapplication is condition-based rather than fixed to a strict schedule. The right moment is when a mechanism starts to feel dry, stiff, or noisy again, or as a preventive step before problems appear.

Different sprays solve different problems, so the right choice depends on the part, the load it carries, and the environment it operates in.

When does dry lubricant spray not solve the problem?

Dry lubricant spray is a maintenance product for parts that still function mechanically but move with too much friction. There are situations where it will not help, and a few where applying it would be the wrong step entirely.

What this spray does not fix:

  • Seized or heavily rusted locks, hinges, or rails. These typically need a penetrating oil, rust treatment, or replacement first. Our rust maintenance articles in the Knowledge Center cover that sequence in more detail.
  • Bent, cracked, or worn parts such as hinges with visible play, damaged seat rail mechanisms, or broken bike components.
  • Safety-critical systems including brakes, steering, and suspension joints. A lubricant spray is not a solution for any of these.
  • Engine performance, fuel consumption, or emissions. Dry spray has no effect on any of these.
  • Long-term rust protection. The thin film offers at best light, incidental protection against moisture, but it is not a rust converter or dedicated corrosion coating.

When to go to a garage or bike shop:

  • When a hinge, lock, seat rail, or bike mechanism is still stiff or noisy after you have cleaned it properly and applied dry lubricant correctly. At that point the problem is likely mechanical rather than a lubrication issue.
  • When you see visible play, cracks, or deformation in the part.
  • When the issue involves brakes, steering, or suspension rather than body hardware or exterior mechanisms.
  • When a sunroof, sliding door, or seat mechanism is still under manufacturer warranty and a specific lubricant type is prescribed. In that case follow the OEM instructions, or have a garage handle it.
  • When you are unsure whether spraying near sensors, electrical connectors, or driver-assistance modules is safe. Use the straw for precision, mask off adjacent areas if needed, and if in doubt, leave it to a professional.

Always keep dry lubricant spray away from brake components and tyre tread. If overspray lands there, wipe it off immediately, as it can reduce the friction those surfaces depend on. Use the spray in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling the aerosol mist.

If you have cleaned and lubricated a part correctly and it still does not move freely, a garage or bike shop is the right next step rather than adding more product.
