Is a catalytic converter cleaner the right product for your situation?

A catalytic converter cleaner is suitable for petrol-powered passenger cars with a functioning catalytic converter. Whether it makes sense for your specific situation depends on what you are dealing with right now.

  • You mostly drive short distances and the engine rarely gets fully warm: Yes. Deposit formation in the catalyst area is more likely with short-trip driving. Preventive use at your regular service interval is a reasonable maintenance step, even without active symptoms.
  • A warning light or emissions-related code has appeared: Possibly, but read the fault code first. If the code points to catalyst efficiency affected by deposits, a treatment may help. If the code indicates sensor failure, misfires, oil burning, or coolant ingress, a cleaner is not the right first step.
  • Your car is due for an MOT or emissions test: Yes, if you use it in time. Add the cleaner before the test so the product has time to work through the system during normal driving. Adding it the day before is too late to expect a meaningful effect.
  • The car runs rough, hesitates, or feels less responsive: Possibly, if deposits are the likely cause. One treatment is the starting point. If symptoms remain unchanged afterwards, the problem is more likely mechanical or electronic, and a garage check is the better next step.

If your car has a confirmed misfire, is burning oil or losing coolant, or has a known mechanical fault, a catalytic converter cleaner is not the right starting point. Those situations need a garage diagnosis first.

Petrol or diesel: which version fits your car?

Petrol and diesel formulations are not interchangeable. Using the wrong variant for your fuel type is not recommended and will not give the intended result. The table below shows which product fits which car.

If you drive a hybrid with a combustion engine, the petrol variant applies. If you are unsure which fuel type your car uses, check the fuel cap or your vehicle documentation before purchasing.

How to use a catalytic converter cleaner correctly

Follow these steps in order for the product to work as intended.

  1. Confirm your fuel type. Use the petrol formulation for petrol engines and the diesel formulation for diesel engines. Do not mix them.
  2. Add the cleaner to a tank that still has some fuel in it. This allows the product to mix properly when you refill. Do not add it to a completely empty tank.
  3. Fill up immediately after adding the cleaner. The fuel mixes the product automatically as the tank fills.
  4. Follow the dosage on the packaging exactly. The correct dose is based on your tank capacity. Using more than the stated amount does not improve the result and is not recommended.
  5. Drive normally after filling, and include a longer run if possible. A sustained drive at higher speeds helps the product circulate through the system and reach operating temperature. This is particularly useful if your normal driving is mostly urban or short-distance.

On frequency:

  • Preventive use: once per service interval is a reasonable starting point, especially if you do a lot of short trips.
  • Symptom-driven use: start with one treatment, then assess. Repeat only if the product label allows it and only at the recommended interval.
  • If symptoms remain unchanged after one treatment, do not keep repeating. The issue may be mechanical rather than deposit-related.

What can this realistically fix, and what can it not?

What a catalytic converter cleaner can help with:

  • Rising emissions before an inspection, where deposits are the cause
  • Preventive maintenance for short-trip drivers with no active symptoms yet

What it cannot fix:

  • A catalytic converter that is physically damaged, melted, or structurally clogged
  • Misfires caused by ignition or injector faults
  • Oxygen sensor or lambda sensor failure
  • Oil burning or coolant ingress into the combustion chamber
  • A failed emissions test where the underlying cause is a confirmed mechanical fault

Overdosing or using a diesel formulation in a petrol car can cause issues and should be avoided.

When should you go to a garage instead?

Some situations are outside the scope of any additive. Go to a garage if:

  • The check engine light or engine management light returns after treatment
  • A fault code confirms a misfire, sensor failure, or catalyst efficiency fault linked to oil or coolant
  • The car is burning oil or losing coolant
  • The car has already failed an emissions test and the inspector identified a mechanical fault
  • The catalytic converter is visibly or audibly damaged

If the check engine light is on and you have not yet read the fault code, do that before using any additive. A code pointing to a sensor, misfire, or oil-related fault means the cleaner is not the right first step. A diagnostic check at a garage will identify what is actually causing the fault, and you can still use a maintenance additive preventively once the underlying issue is resolved.

How does a catalytic converter cleaner compare to a fuel system cleaner or injector cleaner?

These products work in overlapping parts of the same pathway, but they target different points. An injector cleaner or fuel system cleaner focuses on the fuel delivery side: keeping injectors and fuel lines clean. A catalytic converter cleaner is directed further downstream, at deposit-related contamination in the combustion and exhaust area. For most drivers dealing with mild deposit symptoms, one well-chosen product is enough. If you are unsure which to start with, base the choice on your main symptom: fuel delivery issues point toward an injector cleaner, while emissions-related symptoms or short-trip contamination point toward a catalyst cleaner. Combining them is possible but not necessary as a first step.

If the main doubt is whether your situation calls for a petrol or diesel variant, your fuel type settles it. If you are unsure whether your symptom is deposit-related or something more serious, reading the fault code first will give you a clearer answer than any additive can.
