If your petrol car stands unused for weeks or months, the fuel in the tank starts to age. Oxidation and moisture absorption make stored petrol harder to ignite and more likely to leave deposits on injectors and fuel lines. When does a fuel stabilizer actually make sense?
A fuel stabilizer is not a product for every car or every driver. It is most useful when petrol sits in the tank for an extended period without being used.
These are the situations where it makes sense:
- Seasonal car or winter storage (2 to 6 months unused): When your car is parked for months, untreated petrol ages and loses volatility. A stabilizer slows that ageing so the engine starts more reliably in spring.
- Second car or city car that is rarely driven: If the same tank of petrol sits half-full for several weeks at a time, a stabilizer helps keep that fuel usable for longer.
- Plug-in hybrid or mild hybrid: When the petrol engine runs infrequently, fuel can sit in the tank for months without being burned. A stabilizer is a practical preventive measure here, particularly if your manufacturer does not specify a built-in fuel management cycle for storage conditions. If you drive your car several times a week and refuel regularly, fresh petrol cycles through the tank quickly enough that a stabilizer adds little practical benefit. For a standard daily driver, it is usually not necessary.
How do you use it, and how much do you add?
The steps below apply when you know the car will stand unused for an extended period, such as before winter storage.
- Add the stabilizer to the tank before refuelling. Adding it first means the fresh petrol mixes the additive evenly as you fill up.
- Fill up with fresh petrol, ideally close to full. A nearly full tank reduces the air space above the fuel, which limits moisture and condensation during storage.
- Drive for at least 10 to 15 minutes after refuelling. This allows the treated fuel to reach the injectors and fuel lines before the car is parked for an extended period.
- Park the car for storage. No further action is needed during the storage period itself. The stabilizer works in the tank.
For dosage, follow the instructions on the packaging. The Lindemann Fuel System Cleaner treats 8 to 10 refuels, or up to 400 litres of petrol, per bottle. Dose per tank according to the label. Adding slightly more than directed by accident is not harmful at normal car-additive levels, but it offers no extra protection. Avoid doubling or tripling the dose.
A fuel stabilizer slows the ageing of petrol during storage and can extend its usable life by several months, depending on storage conditions. It does not make petrol last indefinitely. Fuel that has been stored for a very long time should be treated with caution or refreshed, even when a stabilizer was used.
If you are adding stabilizer to a half-full tank rather than a full one, it still offers protection. Topping up to near full before storage is preferable, mainly to reduce the air space that contributes to condensation.
Is this safe for my engine and fuel system?
When used at the recommended dosage, a petrol fuel stabilizer is designed to be safe for the components it comes into contact with. It does not significantly change combustion or emissions in a way that triggers warning lights, and it does not foul the lambda sensor or catalytic converter.
Compatible engine and system types:
- Port-injected petrol engines - compatible.
- Direct-injection petrol engines (Euro 6/7) - compatible.
- Turbocharged petrol engines - compatible.
- Start-stop systems and mild hybrids - compatible, provided the fuel is standard E5 or E10 petrol.
- Plug-in hybrid petrol engines - compatible when used as directed.
- Classic petrol engines with a carburetor - generally compatible. For very old fuel systems with original rubber components, specialist advice is worth seeking, as ethanol compatibility in older materials is a broader topic in its own right.
A properly dosed fuel stabilizer is a standard maintenance additive and is not known to cause issues with factory or extended dealer warranties. If you have any doubt, check your owner's manual for the manufacturer's position on fuel additives.
One important boundary: this category is for petrol engines only. Diesel fuel ages differently and requires a diesel-specific additive. Using a petrol stabilizer in a diesel tank is not recommended.
What does a fuel stabilizer do, and what doesn't it fix?
What a fuel stabilizer does:
- Slows fuel ageing in the tank during weeks or months of standstill.
- Helps your car start more easily after storage by keeping fuel closer to its fresh condition.
- Reduces the risk of storage-related deposits from aged petrol on injectors or carburetors.
- Supports cleaner running when you drive again after a period of inactivity, particularly with E10 fuel.
- Helps slow the oxidation and gum formation that E10 petrol is prone to during storage.
What a fuel stabilizer does not fix:
- Does not clean already heavily fouled injectors or fuel system components. That is the role of a petrol cleaner or injector cleaner.
- Does not repair mechanical faults such as worn spark plugs, a weak battery, a faulty fuel pump, or ignition problems.
- Does not restore petrol that has already broken down into gum or varnish, or that is contaminated with water.
- Does not add engine power or guarantee improved fuel consumption. Any benefit is about preventing the deterioration that old fuel causes, not adding anything new.
- Does not guarantee a reliable start after very long storage if other components have degraded in the meantime.

Go to a garage rather than reaching for more additive when:
- The car does not start at all after standing still, even with a charged battery and fuel in the tank. This points to a mechanical or electrical fault, not a fuel quality issue.
- An engine warning light or other fault light stays on after starting or after a short drive. These need diagnostics, not more additive.
- There is a strong sour or unusual smell when you open the fuel cap or from the exhaust after storage. This can indicate serious fuel degradation or contamination. The tank may need draining, which is a job for a professional.
- Misfires, very rough idle, or a clear loss of power persist after you have driven a reasonable distance on fresh fuel, with or without a cleaner. This suggests a deeper fuel system or ignition problem.
- You suspect water or visible contamination in the fuel, for example after an incorrect refuel or flooding. A stabilizer is not appropriate here. The fuel needs to be inspected and possibly drained by a garage.
If your car does not start after standing still and the engine warning light is on, the problem is most likely beyond what a stabilizer can address. These are signs of mechanical failure, serious contamination, or existing deposits that need professional diagnosis.
Fuel stabilizer vs. other petrol additives: which do you need?
