What is PTFE spray actually used for on a car or bike?

PTFE spray works wherever moving parts squeak, stick, or wear faster than they should, and where a greasy lubricant would attract dirt or leave unwanted residue. Below is a practical overview by situation.

On a car:

  • Door hinges: PTFE spray stops squeaks and keeps the hinge moving smoothly without leaving greasy marks or attracting road dust. Lindemann PTFE Universal Spray 300ML is a practical choice for most car hinges, locks, and rails.
  • Boot and bonnet hinges: the water-repellent dry film helps protect against winter moisture and road salt, which is where these hinges typically start to stiffen.
  • Door locks and latches: reduces sticking and jamming after rain, a car wash, or periods of frost.
  • Seat rails and adjustment mechanisms: makes sliding smoother and, unlike oily lubricants, does not turn into black paste over time.
  • Window guides, sunroof rails, and sliding trim: reduces friction in sliding rails and prevents sticking in cold or wet conditions.
  • Tow bar and trailer coupling: suitable for light lubrication and surface protection, but not for heavily loaded bearings (more on that in the section on limits below).

On a bike or e-bike:

Is PTFE spray safe on rubber, plastic, and paintwork?

PTFE spray is generally safe on metals, plastics, and rubber, and does not degrade rubber seals or plastic guides under normal maintenance use. The list below shows where you can apply it with confidence and where you need to be careful.

Safe to use on:

  • Metal hinges, locks, latches, and rails.
  • Seat rails, sliding guides, and adjustment mechanisms.
  • Plastic guides and trim contact points, such as seat mechanisms and window rails.
  • Rubber seals that slide against another surface (though for conditioning rubber door seals and weatherstrips, silicone spray is usually the better choice, as explained in the section on alternatives below).

Keep away from:

  • Brake discs, pads, and caliper friction surfaces: any lubricant on a braking surface reduces stopping performance.
  • Tyre tread.
  • Sensor faces, camera lenses, and delicate electronic connectors.
  • Interior electronics and touchscreens.
  • Painted body panels and glass: PTFE spray does not attack paint or glass, but it leaves a slippery film you do not want there.
  • Very hot exhaust components and engine surfaces: apply only to cool parts.

If you overspray onto paint or glass, wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth before it dries. For electric car owners: PTFE spray is fine for mechanical parts on an EV, including hinges, locks, and window mechanisms, as long as you apply it carefully and keep it away from brake surfaces and high-voltage components.

How do you apply PTFE spray correctly?

  1. Clean the part first. Wipe or brush off dirt, old grease, and rust before you spray. For bike chains, use a chain cleaner first. PTFE spray is a lubricant, not a cleaner or degreaser, so it needs a clean surface to form a proper film.
  2. Shake the can and spray a thin, even layer. Use short bursts or a light pass along the part rather than flooding it. For a bike chain, rotate the chain and make one or two passes so each link receives a light, even coating.
  3. Allow the dry film to form. Wait until the surface feels dry to the touch before using the part. If any overspray lands where you do not want it, wipe it off with a clean cloth while it is still wet.
  4. Move the part several times. Open and close the hinge, operate the lock, or pedal through the chain so the film distributes evenly across the contact surfaces. Squeaks typically stop right after this once the film has dried.

Use PTFE spray only on cool parts, in a well-ventilated space, and keep it away from naked flames and very hot engine components, as the aerosol is flammable.

PTFE spray is not permanent. Very harsh conditions, such as winter salt or off-road dust, can wear the film off sooner than the intervals above suggest, so check treated parts whenever you notice the first signs of returning stiffness or noise.
