Your engine cranks but will not fire. Starting spray gives the air intake a shot of highly volatile fuel so the engine can catch when cold temperatures or a long lay-up make normal ignition difficult, whether you drive a petrol or diesel passenger car, a motorbike, or a piece of garden equipment. It helps the start phase only: once the engine runs, normal fuel supply takes over and the spray plays no further role. Below you find our starting spray for these situations.

When does starting spray actually help, and when doesn't it?
Starting spray is not a repair product. It helps an engine fire when conditions are marginal, but it does not fix the cause of a starting problem. Here is the clearest way to tell whether it is the right tool for your situation.
Starting spray is the right tool when:
- Your engine cranks sluggishly on cold mornings but runs normally once it has started.
- You are restarting a car, motorbike, or lawnmower after weeks or months in storage, and the engine turns but does not catch.
- Your battery is borderline: the starter still turns the engine, but you want to reduce cranking time and the load on a weak battery.
- Slightly tired ignition components or glow plugs are slowing the start, but the engine is otherwise healthy and runs fine once it fires.
Starting spray will not solve:
- A completely flat battery or a starter that barely moves. If the engine is not turning at all, charge or replace the battery first.
- Serious mechanical faults such as very low compression or major fuel system failures.
- A daily starting problem. If you reach for the can almost every time you start the car, there is an underlying fault that needs diagnosis, not more spray.
- Engines that start with the spray but immediately stall or run very rough once the spray effect is gone.

How do you use starting spray correctly?
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignition key before you do anything else.
- Locate the air intake: the airbox opening or intake manifold on modern injection engines, or the carburetor opening on older and small engines.
- Hold the can upright and spray a short burst into the air intake, following the dosage on the packaging.
- Do not spray directly onto sensors or electrical components inside the intake tract.
- Replace any covers you removed, then start the engine immediately after spraying.
- If the engine starts, let it idle briefly and listen for unusual noises before driving away.
Dosage: follow the instructions on the packaging. More is not better. In diesel engines especially, overdosing can cause hard combustion or knocking that puts unnecessary stress on engine components. If the engine does not start after a second attempt, stop cranking and check the cause rather than spraying again.
If you are also relying on a jump starter to get the engine turning, the battery is probably the priority problem. Starting spray reduces cranking time, but it cannot compensate for a battery too flat to turn the engine at useful speed.
Is starting spray safe for your engine?
When used as directed, starting spray is suitable for most petrol and diesel passenger car engines, including modern fuel-injected and turbocharged engines. It works in the air intake and affects only the first ignition events, so it does not interfere with injectors, catalytic converters, or DPF systems at correct dosage. Problems arise almost exclusively from misuse: too much spray, spraying onto sensitive components, or repeated use masking a fault that needs proper attention.
Specific points worth knowing:
- Turbo engines: safe to use with a short burst into the intake. Avoid repeated heavy dosing, which can cause violent combustion and stress the turbocharger.
- MAF and MAP sensors: do not spray directly onto sensors. Aim into the intake opening before the sensor where possible.
- Catalytic converter and DPF: no issue at correct dosage. The spray only supports the first ignition; normal combustion takes over immediately after the engine fires.
- Modern diesel engines with glow plugs or intake heaters: some manufacturers explicitly advise against starting fluid in the owner's manual. Always check before using starting spray on a modern diesel. If the manual forbids it, follow that guidance, including for warranty reasons.
- Rubber hoses and intake parts: occasional correct use does not damage them. Frequent heavy dosing is a different matter and is not recommended.
- E10 petrol compatibility: the fuel type in your tank has no bearing on compatibility, because starting spray goes into the air intake, not the fuel system.
When should you go to a garage instead?
- The engine does not start after one or two attempts with starting spray.
- The engine starts but immediately stalls or runs very rough once the spray effect is gone.
- You hear heavy knocking or other abnormal noises when the engine catches.
- Warning lights appear during or after the start attempt.
- You find yourself using starting spray almost every time you start the car.
- There are visible fuel leaks, a strong fuel smell, or clear signs of an electrical fault.
If you recognise one or more of these situations, stop trying with starting spray and have the car checked by a garage. Persistent cold start problems in diesel engines, in particular, may point to worn glow plugs, injection system issues, or low compression: diagnostic territory that goes well beyond what a can of spray can address.
Petrol or diesel, modern or classic: which starting spray fits your engine?
Most starting sprays, including Lindemann Quick Start, are universal for petrol and diesel passenger car engines because they work through the air intake rather than through the fuel system. The same product is also usable on many small engines such as motorbikes and lawnmowers, as long as the manufacturer does not explicitly forbid starting spray. The one consistent caveat is certain modern diesels: if your owner's manual advises against starting fluid, that instruction takes precedence regardless of the product.
For most private motorists, the choice comes down to situation rather than fuel type:

How to store starting spray safely
- Keep the can upright and secured so it cannot roll, fall, or be punctured.
- Store it away from heat sources and direct sunlight. A closed boot in hot summer weather is not a suitable storage location.
- Starting spray is highly flammable. Keep it away from open flames, sparks, and smoking at all times.
- Do not expose the can to extreme temperatures. Follow the storage guidance on the label for the permitted temperature range.
If you are unsure whether your starting problem calls for a spray or a garage visit, the clearest test is this: if the engine runs normally once it has started, starting spray is a reasonable tool. If it does not, the problem is deeper than a start aid can reach.
