What does a petrol cleaner actually do, and what does it not fix?
Petrol cleaner dissolves carbon deposits, varnish, and coking that build up over time in injectors, intake valves (in port injection engines), the combustion chamber, and fuel lines. When those deposits are the cause of your symptoms, removing them can restore smoother running and more consistent fuel delivery. For light to moderate contamination, you typically notice a difference over one full tank, sometimes sooner. In GDI (direct injection) engines, the cleaner acts mainly on the injectors and combustion chamber; it has limited effect on intake valve deposits, because fuel does not flow over the valves in those engines. Severe intake valve carbon in GDI engines usually requires a different approach or professional cleaning.
At the recommended dose, petrol cleaner is safe for the engine and does not damage injectors, the fuel pump, catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, or a petrol particulate filter (GPF).
What it can improve:

How do you use a petrol cleaner, and how much do you need?
The sequence matters here. Follow these steps:
- Wait until your tank is nearly empty before adding the cleaner. This ensures the product mixes properly with fresh petrol.
- Pour the petrol cleaner into the tank before you refuel.
- Fill the tank to full straight away. The incoming petrol mixes the cleaner immediately and dilutes it to the correct concentration.
- Drive normally. The engine should reach normal operating temperature during your drive. Avoid extended idling only.
- Continue driving until the tank is empty. For light to moderate deposits, one full tank is usually enough to notice a difference.
Dosage: Follow the dosage on the packaging. The label on each product states the exact volume per litre of fuel. Use that as your definitive reference, because bottle sizes differ between products in this range.
Using more than the stated dose is not recommended and can negatively affect combustion and emissions. Using slightly less reduces the cleaning effect but causes no harm.
If you added cleaner to a nearly empty tank and forgot to refuel: the mixture is more concentrated than intended, but this is generally not harmful if you drive gently and refuel as soon as possible. Avoid heavy or prolonged driving until you have refuelled and diluted the product. Do not add a second dose in the next tank.
If you want to use more than one fuel additive (for example a petrol cleaner and an octane booster), use them in separate tank cycles. Combining multiple additives in the same fill is not recommended.
How often should you use a petrol cleaner?
The right interval depends on how and where you drive:
- Preventive use, mixed driving (motorway and town): using a cleaner once or twice a year is sufficient for most drivers. This keeps injectors and the combustion chamber clean without overusing additives.
- Mainly short city trips and frequent stop-start traffic: deposits build up faster because the engine reaches operating temperature less consistently. Using a cleaner more regularly is a sensible approach.
- Corrective use after symptoms (rough idle, hesitation, higher consumption): use one full treatment now, then assess the result over that tank. If there is clear improvement, return to the normal preventive interval. If there is no improvement, do not keep repeating treatments: see the next section for when a garage is the right step.
Using a petrol cleaner at every fill-up is not necessary and adds no benefit beyond the recommended interval.
Premium fuels already contain detergents, but an occasional intensive cleaning treatment can still be useful, particularly for city driving or higher mileage.
When does a petrol cleaner help, and when should you go to a garage?
Try a petrol cleaner first if you notice:
- A slightly rough idle without strong shaking or vibration
- Mild hesitation or a light stutter when you accelerate
- A modest, gradual increase in fuel consumption
- Occasional uneven running on cold starts that settles once the engine warms up
- A marginal result on an emissions test where everything else appears in order
Go to a garage directly if you have:
- Strong misfires, or the engine running on fewer cylinders with heavy shaking
- Severe power loss or very poor acceleration
- Repeated failure to start, or very poor starting behaviour
- A persistent check engine light with fault codes for injector circuits, fuel pressure, sensors, or misfires
- Symptoms that appeared suddenly after misfuelling or a clear mechanical incident
One or at most two treatments are a reasonable response to mild contamination. If nothing changes after that, stop repeating additives and book a garage appointment. Petrol cleaner is a sensible first step for mild symptoms; it is not a substitute for diagnostics when a clear fault is present.
