Car using oil? Here’s what you can do yourself

08-06-2023

High oil consumption in cars is a common problem. Everyone has had to deal with a car that uses oil. Normally the oil consumption of a car is acceptable if it does not exceed 1 liter per 5000 km. However, manufacturers claim that a consumption of 1 liter per 1000 km is still permissible.

Oil consumption is often not the only problem. The cause of oil consumption usually results in lower engine performance. Excessive oil consumption cannot be solved in all cases. When an engine is worn out, only overhaul remains, which is quite expensive and therefore not an option in most cases. However, depending on the cause, there is often something that can be done about it. In this blog we give a number of tips to improve oil consumption.

How much oil consumption is normal?

In principle, a car should not use oil. However, every old car uses some oil, this is not a problem. An acceptable oil consumption for the car is approximately 1 liter per 5000 km.

With an oil consumption of 1 liter per 500 km, there is a good chance that this is a mechanical problem such as worn or broken piston rings. But it could also be that the scraper springs have become stuck due to contamination.

How can you reduce oil consumption in TFSI and TSI engines?

High oil consumption is a particularly common problem with TFSI and TSI engines. The cause of this is poor quality piston rings, which quickly cause contamination.

You cannot easily solve the cause of this pollution, but you can prevent pollution from occurring. You do this with the Lindemann Engine Performance Treatment.

This additive creates an internal Teflon film layer, which ensures that dirt is less likely to stick and dry crankcase vapors do not stick.

How can you reduce oil consumption in THP engines?

You can significantly reduce oil consumption in THP engines, just like in TFSI and TSI engines, by treating the engine with the Lindemann Engine Treatment Bundle in combination with an oil change.

The Lindemann Engine Treatment Bundle consists of the Lindemann Oil System Cleaner (engine flush) and the Lindemann Engine Performance Treatment (engine protector). For further explanation about the application, view the product page.

What are the common causes of oil consumption?

There are several causes for high oil consumption. In most cases, oil consumption is caused by internal wear, leakage and/or contamination. The causes of high oil consumption at a glance:

  • Oil scraper rings that are burnt or worn
  • Compression springs that are solidly carbonized or worn
  • Leakage through camshaft and/or crankshaft oil seals
  • Valve stem rubbers that harden and valve guides that wear out

Stuck or worn oil scraper rings

A common problem is the oil scraper rings that get stuck. The job of oil scraper rings is to scrape the oil that ends up on the cylinder wall to lubricate the cylinder wall and pistons back into the crankcase.

However, if they stick around the piston due to carbon deposits, oil remains on the cylinder wall and some oil enters the compression space. The oil then also burns. This causes oil consumption.

By first loosening the oil scraper rings with a engine flush you can reduce oil consumption fairly cheaply.

Increased crankcase pressure

Too high crankcase pressure is a result of worn compression springs or compression springs that have become stuck around the piston due to carbon deposits. The compression pressure then blows past the piston and cylinder wall into the crankcase. Through the crankcase breather, the crankcase vapor, mixed with oil vapors, is blown back into the inlet and burns along with it.

In this blog we will discuss the causes and solutions for crankcase pressure in more detail.

Leakage along seals

Oil consumption can also be a result of leakage. It is often the seals of camshafts and/or crankshaft that cause this because they lose their flexibility. The Lindemann Oil Stop Leak can remedy or reduce this. Many Oil Stop Leaks contain plasticizers that often have a temporary effect.

However, Lindemann's Oil Stop Leak does not contain plasticizers, but large Teflon molecules that restore the original flexibility and sealing ability. The extra large Teflon molecules also fill small imperfections and thus stop leakage and oil consumption.

Leakage along valve guides and valve rubbers

Leakage along valve guides is either a matter of hardened valve rubbers and these can also be repaired by the Lindemann Oil Stop Leak, or it is a matter of wear of the valve guides. If there is minimal wear, the Oil Stop Leak can still be tried, but if there is extensive wear, overhaul is the only option.

Conclusion: What can you do yourself to reduce oil consumption?

In most cases there is oil consumption due to wear. This can never be completely remedied unless you have the engine overhauled. This is often an expensive affair.

When it comes to oil consumption, we always recommend the Lindemann Engine Performance Treatment to our customers. You do not need to change the oil with this product.

If an oil change is planned at short notice, the Lindemann Engine Treatment Bundle is the best option. This also includes an engine flush, where you have to change the oil.

The extent to which these products will produce results depends on the degree of oil consumption. It is not a miracle cure that makes old engines completely new again. Although some satisfied customers do experience it that way 😉

By applying an internal Teflon layer, this product ensures smoother running of the engine, protection against worse wear and a reduction in oil consumption.
