What an EGR cleaner actually does, and what it does not
An in-tank EGR cleaner works gradually. It acts through the fuel, combustion, and exhaust flow to soften and help remove soot and carbon deposits in the EGR valve, EGR channels, and intake path over one or more treated tanks. With mild fouling and a proper drive cycle, noticeable improvements in rough idle, hesitation, or slight smoke can appear within one treated tank.
What it does:
- Reduces and softens soot and carbon deposits in the EGR valve and intake system over time.
- Cleans injectors and the combustion chamber, which reduces soot formation at the source and indirectly benefits the EGR system, DPF, and turbo.
- Can improve rough idle, hesitation, and mild smoke on a diesel with light fouling.
- Supports preventive maintenance so the EGR system and related components foul more slowly.
- Can help normalise fuel consumption when mild fouling was causing extra use, and may support emission system health by reducing soot load.
What it does not do:
- Does not fix mechanical failures such as a broken EGR actuator, seized valve mechanism, or faulty sensors. Those require diagnosis and repair at a garage.

How to use it, and how often
Applying the additive:

- Check that the product matches your fuel type. Total Care Diesel is for standard pump diesel (B7). Total Care Petrol is for petrol (E5/E10). Do not use a diesel additive in a petrol car or vice versa.
- After dosing, drive for a sustained period at moderate to higher engine speeds. A steady run on a main road or motorway works well. This raises exhaust temperatures enough for the product to work through the EGR and exhaust path.
- Normal driving is fine after that, but very short trips in the days following will limit the effect.
Using more EGR cleaner than the recommended dosage gives no extra cleaning benefit and risks diluting the fuel mixture. Follow the label instructions and treat it as a maintenance product, not a "more is better" solution.
How often:
- Early EGR-related symptoms: use one treatment, then evaluate. If improvement is partial, a second treated tank can help. If there is no meaningful improvement after two tanks with proper driving, a garage visit is the right next step.

Is it safe for your DPF, turbo, and catalytic converter?

It is also safe for injectors and seals under normal conditions; it does not chemically attack common fuel system materials when used as directed.
