You use food-grade grease when moving parts run close to food, drink, or pharmaceutical products, or when you prefer a non-toxic, water-resistant grease on exposed hinges, latches, and towbar components. Food-grade grease is primarily designed for food-processing, packaging, and beverage machinery where incidental contact with food cannot be excluded; for passenger cars and leisure equipment, it is a practical choice for low-to-medium load contact points such as door hinges, bonnet latches, and caravan hitch mechanisms. Use it if.

- You need grease for wheel bearings, brake calipers, suspension joints, clutch components, or internal drivetrain parts. These require application-specific greases and, in most cases, professional fitting.
- You are looking for a performance upgrade or a single grease to cover all lubrication points on your car.
- You have a fault code, warning light, or audible problem from the suspension, steering, or brakes. Grease is not the answer in those situations.
Food-grade grease is primarily an industrial product, used where hygiene regulations require a certifiable, non-toxic lubricant. For passenger cars, it is a valid but limited secondary choice: it performs comparably to standard grease on light hinges and guides, but it does not outperform dedicated automotive greases on critical high-load or high-speed components. H1-certified grease (such as the Lindemann HTF-G) is approved for incidental food contact; H2 grease is for machinery with no food contact at all. Which parts can you use food-grade grease on, and which should you avoid?
Suitable contact points
- Car door and tailgate hinges: exposed, low-to-medium load points that benefit from smooth operation and corrosion protection.
- Bonnet and boot latches: moving catches that need light, clean lubrication.
- Seat slide rails: lightly loaded sliding mechanisms (only where the manufacturer allows grease application).
- Sunroof guides: slow-moving guides; apply a thin layer only, to avoid attracting dirt.
- Door locks and bonnet latch mechanisms: small internal moving parts; apply sparingly.
- Trailer coupling and towbar mechanisms: exposed to weather, benefit from water-resistant lubrication.
- Caravan hitch bearings: low-speed bearings in leisure use that benefit from water-resistant, high-temperature-stable grease.
- Bike rack and carrier mechanisms: clamping points and hinges exposed to rain and road splash.
- Light hinges and joints on outdoor equipment: garden machinery access panels, storage latches, and similar low-load points.
For high-temperature bearings in food-processing and packaging machinery, and for caravan hitch bearings and outdoor-exposed towbar mechanisms, Lindemann HTF-G Food Grade 400gr is the recommended product; for normal car door hinges and latches, a thin layer from the same product is sufficient.
Do not use on these parts
- Brake discs, pads, calipers, and sliders: grease on any brake component seriously reduces braking performance and is unsafe.
- Wheel bearings on passenger cars: these require a specific automotive wheel-bearing grease and professional fitting.
- Suspension joints and bushings: load-bearing safety components that must only be serviced at a garage with manufacturer-specified products.
- Clutch parts and release bearings: critical driveline components with specific lubrication requirements; incorrect grease can affect warranty.
- Internal engine parts, gearbox, and differential: require dedicated oils or greases, not food-grade grease.
- ABS sensors, rubber dust boots, and safety-related sensor areas: risk of contamination and interference with correct operation.
If you hear knocking, grinding, or scraping from the suspension, steering, or brakes, or if a hinge or latch is visibly bent or worn, grease is not the solution. In those cases, a garage inspection is the right step. If grease contacts brake discs, pads, or tyres, clean the surface immediately. For electric vehicles, hinge and latch lubrication needs are broadly similar, but high-voltage components must not be greased.
Is it safe for rubber, plastics, and painted surfaces?
Food-grade grease is generally safe on common automotive rubber seals and plastic parts when applied in a thin layer, but compatibility depends on the specific formulation and the elastomer type. If you are unsure, apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area first and check for any swelling or softening before applying more widely. One clear boundary: avoid applying near brake rubber, clutch seals, or ABS sensor dust boots, because contamination of those systems is not acceptable regardless of how safe the grease is in other contexts. If a small amount reaches painted bodywork accidentally, it will not damage the paint, but wipe it away promptly to avoid dust and dirt building up on the surface.
Water resistance, corrosion protection, and temperature range
A quality food-grade grease provides meaningful water resistance and helps protect exposed metal parts such as door catches, bonnet latches, towbar components, and caravan hitch points against corrosion from rain and car-wash splash. It is not a rust converter or a repair product for already-corroded surfaces; it works best as a preventive layer applied to clean, undamaged metal.

Even with a temperature range that extends to +400 °C, this grease is not suitable for brake calipers, brake sliders, or passenger car wheel bearings. Those components require application-specific greases as specified by the vehicle manufacturer, and in most cases the work should be carried out by a garage.
How and how often do you apply food-grade grease?
Application steps
- Clean the part: remove old grease, dirt, and any surface rust with a clean cloth and, if needed, a mild cleaner or degreaser. Do not apply food-grade grease over a different type of grease already on the part; mixing grease types is not recommended, as incompatibility can reduce lubrication performance and accelerate wear.
- Apply a thin layer to the actual contact surfaces. For a door hinge, that means the pin and the moving joint; for a latch, the moving catch and its contact face. A thin, even layer is enough. More grease does not mean better protection; excess grease attracts dirt and can make the mechanism sticky over time.
- Move the mechanism several times so the grease spreads evenly across the contact area.
- Wipe away any visible excess with a clean cloth.
- Note the date or add the point to your annual maintenance checklist so you know when to check it again.
The Lindemann HTF-G can be applied manually with a cloth or brush, and is also compatible with a standard grease gun for bearing applications.
When to reapply
- You hear squeaking when opening doors, the tailgate, or the bonnet.
- A hinge, lock, or seat rail feels stiff or shows resistance.
- You can see visible dryness or light surface rust forming at a metal contact point.
- The part has been through intensive washdown, repeated car washes, or prolonged wet weather.
For normal passenger car use, reapply when the signs above appear, or include these points in your regular maintenance check. Caravans and trailers that stand outside for extended periods benefit from a check before and after the season.
