Is a turbo cleaner the right solution for your situation?

A turbo cleaner is appropriate when:

  • Your turbo diesel runs normally and you want to keep the turbo, injectors, EGR, and DPF clean preventively, with no fault codes and no drivability complaints.
  • You have noticed early, mild symptoms such as slightly less pull under load, a small increase in black smoke under acceleration, or fuel consumption that has crept up without any other clear cause, but there is no limp mode and no active fault code.
  • You suspect soft soot deposits or mildly sticking turbo vanes, but the car is still fully driveable and there are no loud mechanical noises.
  • You want a low-risk first step before booking a workshop appointment, and the symptoms are still mild and recent.

Go to a garage instead when:

  • The turbo makes audible whining, grinding, or rattling noises.
  • The car has gone into limp mode, or there are active fault codes related to boost pressure, the turbo, DPF, or EGR.
  • You see blue smoke, heavy white smoke, or there is a clear increase in oil consumption.
  • There are visible oil leaks around the turbo housing, intercooler pipes, or exhaust connections.
  • Power loss is severe or sudden, or the car feels unsafe to drive.

These are signs of mechanical failure. An additive cannot fix them, and delaying proper diagnosis risks making the situation worse.

What does a turbo cleaner actually do, and what should you expect?

A turbo cleaner works by improving combustion cleanliness. Cleaner combustion produces less soot, which means fewer deposits building up in the turbo, EGR channels, DPF, and injectors over time. On a lightly to moderately contaminated system, it can also help soften and gradually reduce existing soft deposits over one or more tanks. It is a maintenance additive, not a mechanical repair.

What a turbo cleaner can do:

  • Reduce the rate of soot and carbon deposit formation in the turbo, EGR, and DPF.
  • Support cleaner injectors and more complete combustion, which can result in smoother running and, in some cases, marginally more consistent throttle response and fuel consumption.
  • Help reduce sticking of turbo vanes in the early stages, when deposits are still soft and not yet hardened.
  • Act as preventive maintenance, particularly if you drive short trips or a lot of city kilometres where the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature.
  • Make mild symptoms such as slightly sluggish response or a modest increase in black smoke less noticeable after one or a couple of treated tanks.

What a turbo cleaner does not do:

  • Repair mechanical turbo damage such as worn bearings, damaged blades, or shaft play.
  • Stop oil leaks or restore worn turbo seals.
  • Unclog a fully blocked DPF or free a heavily stuck EGR valve; those require mechanical cleaning or replacement.
  • Override fault codes or limp mode; these need proper diagnosis and repair.
  • Increase power beyond factory specification. Any improvement you notice comes from restoring normal operation, not from tuning.
  • Remove heavy, long-standing carbon buildup. For that, professional cleaning or parts replacement is the appropriate step.

If symptoms do not improve after one or two treatments, the underlying cause is mechanical and needs a workshop.

A diesel turbo cleaner must not be used in a petrol engine, and a petrol-specific cleaner must not go into a diesel. The fuel types are not interchangeable.

When used at the correct dosage, these products are safe for engines equipped with DPF, EGR, and AdBlue systems. The additive goes into the fuel; AdBlue is a completely separate system with no direct contact. Using a compatible fuel additive as directed does not alter any mechanical components and therefore does not normally affect your manufacturer's warranty. If you have specific concerns about an extended warranty, check the terms with your provider.

How to use a turbo cleaner: dosage, timing and what to do after treatment

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm your car is a turbocharged diesel on standard road diesel (B7 or B10) if you are using the diesel product, or a petrol engine for the petrol cleaner. Do not mix fuel types.
  2. Add to the fuel tank. Pour the full bottle directly into your fuel tank before or immediately after refuelling. Do not add it to the engine oil, the air intake, or the turbo housing.
  3. Refuel. Fill up with your usual amount of diesel. One bottle treats a full tank. Using less than recommended reduces effectiveness; using moderately more does not give extra benefit and is unnecessary.
  4. Drive normally. No special driving technique is needed, but make sure there is at least one longer drive where the engine and exhaust reach full operating temperature. A motorway run of reasonable length fits this well.
  5. Monitor. Pay attention to throttle response, smoke under acceleration, and fuel consumption over the next tank or two. If symptoms do not change after one or two treatments, a garage inspection is the right next step.

A few additional points:

  • Smaller tanks: scale the dosage proportionally. Larger tanks: use enough product to reach the recommended concentration. When in doubt, follow the dosage on the packaging.
  • Combining additives: you can use a turbo cleaner in the same tank as a DPF cleaner or an injector cleaner, as long as you stay within the recommended dosage for each product individually. Do not stack several high-dose additives at the same time without checking the individual instructions first.
  • What working looks like: you may notice smoother throttle response, less diesel knock, or a modest reduction in black smoke over one to several tanks. For preventive use on a healthy engine, there is often no dramatic change to feel; the benefit is in keeping problems away over time.

How often should you use turbo cleaner?

The right interval depends on how you drive. Three profiles to guide you:

  • Preventive use, mixed or highway driving: using it periodically, for example tying it to a major service or oil change, is a practical approach for most drivers.
  • Preventive use, mostly short city trips: if your engine rarely reaches full operating temperature, you can use it a little more often than for mixed or highway driving.
  • Corrective use, early symptoms present:
  • Do one full treatment and monitor behaviour over that tank.
  • If there is partial improvement, a second treatment at the next fill-up is reasonable.
  • If there is no noticeable change after one or two treatments, go to a garage for diagnosis. Continuing to add product will not resolve a mechanical problem.

Using a turbo cleaner in every tank is not necessary and adds no extra benefit; it only increases cost without improving results.

How do you know if the turbo cleaner has worked?

A few simple checks you can do yourself: throttle response feels more consistent under load, there is less black smoke under acceleration than before, and cold starts feel a bit smoother. These are the most common signs that combustion and deposit levels have improved. If you used it preventively on a healthy engine, you may not notice a dramatic difference at all; the benefit is in sustained drivability over time rather than a sudden change.

Diagnostic-level confirmation, such as a lower DPF soot load reading or more stable EGR and turbo control data, requires workshop tools and is not something most drivers will measure themselves. If symptoms that were present before treatment have not improved or have got worse after one or two treatments, the cause is mechanical and the next step is a garage visit, not another bottle.
