Bearing grease belongs on rotating mechanical parts: wheel bearings, trailer hubs, bike bearings, and chassis grease points. It keeps metal surfaces separated under load, resists water and pressure, and protects against corrosion between maintenance intervals. What it does not do is repair bearings that are already damaged or noisy; if your car is already showing symptoms, the right first step is a garage, not a tin of grease.

When do you actually need bearing grease?
Bearing grease is for serviceable bearings: rotating assemblies that are designed to be cleaned, inspected, and repacked at regular intervals. The key question before you reach for a product is whether your bearings are actually serviceable at all.
- Older serviceable car bearings: these can be repacked as part of regular maintenance.
- Trailer and caravan hubs: typically serviceable, and one of the most common DIY use cases.
- Bike hubs, headsets, and bottom brackets: serviceable in most designs and straightforward to regrease.
- Chassis grease points: suspension pivots and kingpins with grease nipples accept grease directly via a grease gun.
- Modern sealed wheel hub units (most cars made after roughly 2000): these are not designed for re-greasing. When a sealed hub bearing fails, the whole unit is replaced, usually at a garage.
If you already hear a hum, feel roughness when turning the wheel by hand, or notice any play or wobble, fresh grease will not reverse that. Noise and play in a bearing point to mechanical damage that requires replacement, not lubrication.
Which type of bearing grease fits your situation?
Not every grease suits every bearing. The main variables are load, temperature, speed, and environment. Use this table to find the right starting point.

How much grease, and how often?
Dosage
- Fill a bearing partially, not completely. Packing a bearing solid causes overheating because the rolling elements cannot move freely through the lubricant.
- Follow the dosage on the packaging or product page for guidance on fill quantity.
- Remove old, contaminated grease before applying fresh product. Grease cannot clean out contamination; it only dilutes it.
- Do not mix different grease types if you are unsure what is already inside. Some thickener types are chemically incompatible and can cause the grease to soften or separate. When in doubt, clean the old grease out first.
Interval
- Follow the OEM interval for your vehicle or machine if one is specified, whether that is expressed in kilometres, hours, or calendar time.
- Harsher conditions (wet, dirty, heavily loaded, or high-temperature environments) shorten the interval; inspect more frequently in those cases.
- Sealed wheel bearings on modern cars need no re-greasing. There is no serviceable interval; replacement is the only maintenance action.
- Trailers and seasonal vehicles that have stood for a year or more should have their bearing grease inspected before any long trip. Grease can dry out, harden, or separate over time even if the vehicle has barely moved.
Is this a DIY job or a garage job?
Whether bearing maintenance is realistic at home depends on the type of bearing and what condition it is in. Serviceable bearings with accessible grease nipples or open housings are generally straightforward. Pressed-in hub units on modern cars are a different matter entirely.

- Trailer hubs with serviceable (tapered roller) bearings
- Bike hubs, headsets, and bottom brackets
- Chassis grease nipples using a grease gun
Go to a garage
- Pressed-in wheel bearing units that require special tooling to remove and install
- ABS-integrated hub bearings, where incorrect disassembly can damage the sensor ring or wiring
- Any bearing already showing noise, play, heat, or a burning smell before you start
- Safety-critical wheel bearings on a daily-driven car where you have any doubt about the condition
If you notice a burning smell from a wheel area, feel play or wobble in the wheel, or hear grinding that does not stop after correctly re-greasing, a garage inspection is the right next step. These are signs of mechanical damage that grease cannot correct.

What bearing grease does not do
- It does not repair a bearing that is already noisy, rough, or showing play. Those bearings need replacement.
- It does not improve fuel economy in any noticeable way. The benefit is durability and reliability over time, not lower consumption at the pump.
- It does not belong on brake friction surfaces (pads or discs), in fuel systems, in engine oil circuits, or in hydraulic systems.
- It does not fix failed bearing seals or dust covers. A damaged seal needs replacement; grease will not compensate for it.
- It does not clean contaminated grease out of a bearing. The old grease must be removed before fresh product is applied.
