Is Oil Leak Stop the right solution for your leak?

Minor drops or sweating, no warning lights

Oil Leak Stop conditions aged rubber seals. That determines both what it can help with and where it has no effect at all.

What it addresses

  • Minor oil leaks and sweating from crankshaft seals, including the rear main seal.
  • Minor leaks from camshaft seals.
  • Leaks and mild oil consumption from aged valve stem seals.
  • General elastomer seals in the engine oil circuit that are hardened or slightly shrunken but still structurally intact.

What it does not address

  • Large leaks, rapid oil loss, or any situation causing a low oil pressure warning.
  • Cracked gaskets, torn seals, warped housings, or a damaged oil pan.
  • Oil consumption caused by worn piston rings or cylinder wall wear; those are mechanical issues an additive cannot resolve.
  • Leaks in gearboxes, power steering systems, differentials, or cooling systems; the product is strictly for the engine oil circuit.
  • Any performance improvement: no power, torque, or fuel economy claims apply.

On the question of thicker oil as an alternative: switching to a slightly thicker grade at your next service can reduce seepage slightly, but it does not condition or rejuvenate seals. Follow your manufacturer's viscosity recommendation and treat the seals directly if that is where the problem lies.

How do you use it, and how much do you add?

Oil Leak Stop is an engine oil additive: it goes into the oil filler, not into the fuel tank or coolant reservoir. The steps are straightforward.

  1. Warm the engine briefly, then switch it off and park on level ground.
  2. Remove the oil filler cap and pour one 300 ml bottle into the engine oil.
  3. Refit the cap, start the engine, and drive normally so the additive can circulate and reach the seals.
  4. If your next scheduled service is close, you can also add it directly after an oil change to fresh oil.

Follow the dosage on the packaging. Do not exceed the recommended concentration: a higher dose does not improve results and may affect oil properties.

On frequency: this is a one-time treatment when a minor leak is first noticed. If there is clear improvement but the seepage has not fully stopped, you can repeat the treatment at the next oil change. It is not intended as a routine additive for engines with no leak symptoms.

One practical note: if you plan to use an engine flush, do that before the oil change and before adding Oil Leak Stop. Avoid mixing multiple oil additives at the same time.

Is it safe for your engine and oil type?

Lindemann Oil Stop Leak is compatible with synthetic, semi-synthetic, and mineral engine oils, including modern low-viscosity grades such as 0W20, 5W30, and 5W40. At the recommended dosage, it does not significantly alter viscosity, oil pressure, or oil pump operation. The product is formulated for passenger car petrol and diesel engines, including turbocharged engines, when used at the correct concentration. At that dosage, it does not negatively affect turbo lubrication or turbo seals.

How do you know if it is working?

Oil Leak Stop does not work instantly. The product needs to circulate through the engine and reach the seals, which takes several hundred kilometres of normal driving before a noticeable reduction in seepage or oil consumption. To monitor progress after treatment:

  • Check your oil level on the dipstick every one to two weeks and note whether the level drops more slowly than before.
  • Inspect the ground under the car after parking for new spots, or a reduction in existing ones.
  • If you suspected valve stem seals, watch for blue smoke on cold starts and note whether it becomes lighter or less frequent over time.

Some situations are beyond what any additive can address. Go to a garage if:

  • Your oil level drops noticeably within days or after a single trip.
  • The oil pressure warning light or another engine warning comes on.
  • You see a pool or wide streak of oil under the car, not just a few drops.
  • You notice heavy blue smoke or a strong burning-oil smell while driving.

In these cases, an additive is not enough. Book a workshop appointment so a mechanic can identify whether the leak involves mechanical damage or a safety-critical component before you consider any further steps.
