Cleaning car windows in 7 steps

23-01-2022

Car windows are an essential part of your vehicle. That is exactly why it is important to keep them clean and sparkling. Often, a car window is quickly wiped with a cloth and some water, and usually only on the outside. However, the inside is just as important.

With the right products, you can keep your car windows in excellent condition. In this blog, you will learn how to clean your car windows effectively and which products you need to achieve a great result.

Here are a few benefits of clean car windows:

  • Better visibility always means greater safety.
  • Crystal-clear glass is the perfect and most noticeable finishing touch for any detail.
  • With the right products, cleaning car windows is easier than most people think.

Cleaning the outside of car windows

Fresh-looking car windows are a plus, but keeping them clean is also very important. Safety plays a major role here. When it comes to exterior glass, there are four things to consider: safe dirt removal, restoration or decontamination if necessary, finishing and protection.

Cleaning car windows

Exterior glass is exposed to the weather, which is one of the main reasons it often needs to be cleaned even more frequently than the paintwork. By using the right products, however, dirt can be removed quickly and safely. That is why it is important to clean your car windows from time to time.

As with every other aspect of detailing, the amount of dirt to be removed matters. Heavily soiled car windows should be washed during the normal cleaning process with Velorest Perfect Shampoo.

It is important that car windows are washed and dried effectively. Window glass is much stronger than paintwork, but scratches can still occur on glass.

Lightly soiled car windows can be cleaned directly with a top product such as Velorest Glass Cleaner. This is perfect for maintenance cleaning between washes and for full detailing.

The alcohol-based cleaning agents are designed to chemically dissolve dirt before evaporating. On a microscopic level, glass is not actually smooth. The surface is uneven, allowing dirt and even water molecules to become trapped. Velorest Glass Cleaner penetrates the surface and cleans your car windows thoroughly.

Cleaning the inside of car windows

Effective cleaning on the inside of your car windows is still essential to make sure your visibility while driving is not affected. The inside of your car windows is not exposed to the weather in the same way as the outside, but it still needs to be cleaned from time to time.

On a cold winter day, you will probably need to scrape the windows first. Many people turn the heater up fully, but it can still take quite a while before visibility improves. People often wipe moisture away with their hands or a cloth, which leaves greasy fingerprints behind. These are not pleasant to keep looking through.

The good news is that dirt and fingerprints can be effectively removed with Velorest Glass Cleaner.

The product consists of a mild blend of distilled solvents. These are highly effective at breaking down greasy marks so they can be wiped away. Velorest Glass Cleaner is also perfect for use on tinted windows, which is especially important because delicate tint films are always applied to the inside of the glass.

Do you have tinted car windows where visibility is especially important? No problem. Our Glass Cleaner is also safe for lightweight polycarbonate and acrylic motorsport windows.

Tips for cleaning your own car windows

We have listed seven tips for you. Follow these steps, and you can be sure your car windows will look clear and glossy. Try it yourself.

1. Open the windows

Many people forget this step, but with some cars it makes sense to open the windows when you start cleaning them. This allows the hidden sections of glass to be cleaned thoroughly as well.

It is also a good idea to do this while drying, especially on cars fitted with wind deflectors. This way, you can reach all of the glass.

2. Always dry car windows before cleaning

Drying your glass after washing is always essential. Always dry thoroughly to prevent water marks. Use a drying towel for this, preferably the Velorest Drying Towel or the Velorest Premium Drying Towel.

Both towels are highly absorbent and can hold 3 to 4 litres of water.

3. Use good cloths

Short-pile microfibre cloths are best for use with glass cleaners. For the ultimate glass cleaning result, however, use a cloth specifically designed for cleaning car windows.

We offer two excellent cloths for this. Both have a specially woven design that traps dirt, so it no longer comes into contact with your car window while wiping. Our super-soft Glass Towel is ideal for wiping away Velorest Glass Cleaner.

4. Work from the outside in

When cleaning car windows, make sure you work from the outside in. Spray the Glass Cleaner over the glass and start by wiping along the edges, followed by the centre section. This helps you clean the entire window properly.

5. Turn on the heating

Tip: make sure the inside of your car windows is slightly warm before cleaning them. This allows the solvents to evaporate even faster and gives you a better result.

6. Use different wiping directions

Try wiping from left to right on the outside and from top to bottom on the inside. This way, if you leave any streaks behind, you can more easily identify where they are.

7. Do not forget the rest

We are talking about your mirrors and possibly your headlights. After all, our products are glass cleaners, and they are just as effective on these areas as they are on car windows.
