Fault code P2002

01-04-2025

What type of fault code is P2002?

Fault code P2002 indicates a problem with the diesel particulate filter, also known as the DPF. More specifically, it means the filter contains too much soot or is clogged.

The code is often triggered when the engine control unit, or ECU, detects that the DPF is not functioning properly or that soot combustion is not efficient enough. This usually occurs in diesel engines equipped with a DPF, which is designed to filter harmful particles such as soot and ash from the exhaust gases.

A common cause of fault code P2002 is a clogged DPF, usually due to insufficient regeneration. Regeneration is the process in which soot inside the filter is burned off to reduce buildup. If this process does not work properly, the DPF can become clogged. This affects engine performance and may lead to increased fuel consumption and reduced engine output.

Possible causes of fault code P2002 include:

  • Insufficient or failed DPF regeneration
  • Excessive soot buildup due to short journeys or insufficient engine load
  • A defective DPF temperature or pressure sensor
  • Poor fuel quality or incomplete fuel combustion

Solving fault code P2002 usually requires a diagnosis of the DPF system and possibly cleaning or replacing the filter if the blockage is severe.

In which cars does P2002 often occur?

Fault code P2002 is common in various car brands, especially diesel vehicles equipped with a diesel particulate filter. Common models where this fault code is often found include VW, Renault, Audi, Ford and Tecnams, as well as Honda Fit models.

In these vehicles, the fault code may occur when the DPF becomes clogged due to excessive soot buildup, often caused by insufficient regeneration or frequent short trips.

This issue can lead to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption and poor exhaust emissions. It is important to check the DPF regularly and make sure regeneration is working properly to prevent or solve fault code P2002.

In some cases, the DPF may need to be cleaned or replaced to restore engine performance. In our blog about a clogged DPF, you can read more about cleaning and replacing the diesel particulate filter.

How can an additive help solve P2002?

The code is triggered when the engine computer detects that the DPF is not functioning properly, often because the filter has collected too much soot and can no longer regenerate, or self-clean, effectively.

An additive can help solve fault code P2002 in the following ways:

  1. Improving DPF regeneration: Some additives are designed to improve the combustion of soot inside the DPF, allowing the filter to regenerate more easily. This helps reduce soot buildup and prevent blockages. A DPF Cleaner is an example of this type of product.
  2. Reducing smoke production: Additives can help reduce the amount of soot entering the DPF by improving fuel combustion. This can help prevent blockages and optimise filter operation. In this case, it is highly recommended to add an additive preventively to stay ahead of contamination. For diesel engines, you can use Lindemann Diesel Boost. Owners of petrol cars are best advised to use Fuel System Cleaner.
  3. Removing deposits: In some cases, additives can also help reduce clogged or hardened soot deposits in the DPF, allowing the filter to work more efficiently again.

Good to know: additives can temporarily help improve DPF operation, but they do not always fully solve the underlying problem. If the filter is severely clogged, the DPF may need to be professionally cleaned or even replaced.

It is important to understand that additives are often not a permanent solution if the DPF already has significant damage or severe blockages. Regularly checking the condition of the DPF and maintaining the engine properly remains essential.
