A dirty EGR valve that remains open can heavily contaminate the intake system. Short trips, overly long oil change intervals, a dirty air filter and oil consumption are common causes of intake contamination.
Symptoms of intake contamination include rough or poor idling, warning lights on the dashboard and reduced engine power. After around 50,000 km, the intake manifold can be full of heavy carbon deposits, resulting in power loss of anywhere from 1 to possibly 20 hp.
After the turbo, EGR and intercooler, the air flows towards the intake manifold. Because of the EGR system, dirty exhaust gases also pass through the intake. This air is sticky and full of tar and soot.
Preventing a dirty intake manifold
There are several ways to prevent intake contamination. First of all, especially with diesel engines, it is important not to drive only short distances where the engine never reaches operating temperature. This causes incomplete combustion, which creates even more internal contamination.
You can also consider adding half a bottle of Lindemann Diesel Boost at every refuel. One full bottle is suitable for 100 litres of diesel. This additive has many benefits, but in this case we will focus specifically on how it improves combustion.
Improved combustion produces cleaner exhaust gases, which means those gases leave behind less contamination in the EGR valve and intake manifold. Better combustion also results in a slight fuel saving, which means this product almost pays for itself.

Cleaning the intake manifold with an additive
Besides using an aerosol cleaner, there is another way to clean the intake system. With Lindemann Total Care Diesel, you can clean the intake manifold and intake valves easily, without any mechanical work. This additive is added to the fuel, after which the cleaning agents in the product do their job.
In addition to cleaning the intake, Total Care Diesel also cleans the rest of the intake and exhaust system, including the EGR valve. As mentioned earlier, a dirty intake system is often related to a dirty EGR valve. With this product, you tackle both components at the same time.
If you decide to use this product, we recommend adding a full 1-litre can to the fuel tank. Then drive for at least 20 minutes at an engine speed between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm. This opens the EGR valve, allowing the cleaning agents in Total Care Diesel to pass through the EGR and into the intake system.
It is also important that the engine reaches proper operating temperature so that the carbon deposits become warm. This significantly increases the effect of the product. Cold, hardened carbon deposits are difficult, if not almost impossible, to remove.
