How do I prevent bacterial growth in diesel?

13-11-2021

Since 1 October 2019, only B7 diesel has been available at fuel stations. Using B7 diesel has several disadvantages, especially for older vehicles, classic cars, vintage cars and campers.

The biggest disadvantage of the new diesel is that the added bio-component is hygroscopic, which means it attracts moisture. B7 diesel fuel contains less sulphur than older diesel fuels, which results in less lubrication and more moisture. These small amounts of moisture can be harmful to sensitive injectors and nozzles.

It turns out that the new B7 biodiesel attracts 6 to 8 times more moisture than old regular diesel fuel. Lindemann Service Cleaner Diesel can be added annually to clean your fuel system.

Moisture in the fuel tank

Moisture in the fuel tank can be caused by dark storage conditions, temperature fluctuations, extra oxygen due to a poorly tightened fuel cap, and long periods of vehicle inactivity, for example during the winter months.

The moisture in the air condenses, causing water droplets to enter the diesel. Too much moisture, also known as condensation water, will slowly sink to the bottom of the fuel tank and form a water layer. This condensation water can lead to bacterial growth and mould.

Consequences of bacterial growth

  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Contaminated fuel tank that needs to be cleaned
  • Corrosion and rust inside the fuel tank
  • Valves and injectors may become damaged
  • Machine downtime

Moisture in diesel and bacterial growth

The winter months have arrived again, which means wetter and harsher weather conditions. Campers and classic vintage cars are often stored away for a longer period during this season.

To prevent bacterial growth, we recommend filling your vehicle completely before long-term storage and adding Diesel Boost. With a completely full tank, there is no space for air and therefore no condensation water that can cause bacterial growth. However, once you take your camper or classic car out of storage, you should drive it immediately.

Why Diesel Boost? Diesel Boost cleans and lubricates the entire fuel system and helps keep your engine and fuel system clean and in good condition. Because the product does not contain solvents, it is highly suitable for preventing bacterial growth.

Lindemann Diesel Boost does not absorb condensation water, but encapsulates it and prevents it from passing through the fuel filter.
