I recently had an engine problem. I had the problem read out at the dealer where our car came from. It turned out to be a catalyst report. The technician had reset the message with the message that if the message came back, I had to come back again. Within two weeks I indeed had another engine failure. I went back to the dealer, had the fault read out, and sure enough…. another catalyst report.
The workshop manager indicated that the catalyst was worn out and needed to be replaced. I only have 90,000km on the odometer, so this seemed a bit fast to me. I was told that this would cost approximately €1350. I asked if he wanted to reset the message again, and indicated that if the fault returned, I would report back. Unfortunately, the message returned within a week.
Now I thought... does it really have to cost so much money? So I started searching on Google for other options.
For example, I read that a catalytic converter can become contaminated and clogged, causing incorrect readings to be transmitted from the sensors to the on-board computer.
I soon ended up on the Dutch Performance Products site. There I saw the Lindemann Service Cleaner Benzine and ordered it. This Service Cleaner Benzine removes carbon deposits and other dirt residues from inside the engine and fuel system including pistons, catalyst, valves and injectors.
A 400ml bottle is good for 80l of fuel. I added 250ml to 50l of fuel and then drove about 50km on the highway at about 100kmh average.
A few days later I had the message reset again. Indicated that I did not want to have a new catalyst installed for the time being, and that I hoped they would not see me again for a while.
It is now 6 weeks later and the fault has not returned. In addition, I have the feeling that the engine behaves a little calmer and that fuel consumption has decreased slightly.
All in all I am more than satisfied. No new catalyst yet! 🙂
