What type of fault code is P0401?
Fault code P0401 indicates a problem with the engine’s EGR system, also known as Exhaust Gas Recirculation. More specifically, it means there is insufficient exhaust gas recirculation.
The EGR system is designed to route part of the exhaust gases back into the engine in order to lower combustion temperatures. This helps reduce nitrogen oxides, or NOx, in the exhaust gases.
When fault code P0401 appears, it usually means there is a blockage or defect in the EGR system, for example in the EGR valve or the related pipes. This can be caused by carbon deposits building up and blocking the system, disrupting airflow.
Insufficient EGR system operation can lead to poorer engine performance, increased fuel consumption and higher emissions.
Common causes of fault code P0401 include:
- Contamination of the EGR valve or EGR channels
- A defective EGR valve
- Problems with the EGR sensors
The problem can often be solved by cleaning the EGR system or replacing defective parts. Cleaning can be done yourself with an EGR cleaner.
Can I solve this myself with an additive?
In some cases, P0401 can be resolved with an additive. Fault code P0401 points to a problem with the EGR system, meaning not enough exhaust gases are being recirculated back into the engine.
This may be caused by a blocked EGR valve or EGR channels, often due to carbon buildup. In this situation, you can often clean the EGR valve yourself by adding an additive.
For diesel engines, we offer Lindemann Total Care Diesel. If you drive a petrol car, you can add Total Care Petrol to your fuel tank.
An additive can help solve these blockages. Specific EGR cleaning additives can dissolve carbon deposits and improve the operation of the EGR valve, allowing the system to function better and the fault code to disappear.
These additives help clean the EGR system without manually dismantling the valve or channels. In our blog, you can read more about a clogged EGR valve.
Good to know: if the problem is too severe or the blockages are stubborn, the EGR valve may need to be physically cleaned or replaced.
