What is wax lubricant used for on a bike or car?

The answer depends on the part. Here is a quick overview of where wax lubricant works, and where it does not.

Bike applications

  • Bike chain (city bikes, e-bikes (chain side only, not the motor), road bikes, MTBs): suitable. Leaves a dry-to-touch film that sheds light dirt better than traditional chain oil, which means cleaner clothing for commuters.
  • Derailleur pivots and jockey wheels: suitable, applied sparingly.
  • Disc brake rotors and pads: not suitable. See the safety section below.

Car applications

  • Door hinges: suitable. A thin wax layer helps the hinge move more smoothly and gives basic protection against rust.
  • Bonnet and boot hinges, bonnet catch: suitable. Light protection against corrosion and smoother operation.
  • Door locks: suitable, particularly the mechanical latch. Wipe off any overspray promptly.
  • Seat rails: limited use. Suitable for light lubrication if the rail is accessible, but persistent sticking or heavy wear may need grease or a garage visit.
  • Window guides and sunroof tracks: suitable with care for the sliding surfaces. Do not spray into motors or near electrical components.
  • Interior squeaks (glovebox hinges, centre console, plastic contact points): sometimes suitable on plastic-on-plastic or plastic-on-metal contact, applied sparingly.
  • Wheel bearings, bottom brackets, and other high-load pivot points: not suitable. These need a dedicated bearing grease.

Wax lubricant works on external moving parts regardless of your fuel type or engine. It has no connection to petrol, diesel, or engine oil systems.

Where should you not use wax lubricant?

Some parts must stay free of lubricant entirely. Applying wax lubricant in the wrong place can create a safety risk or cause damage.

  • Brake discs, brake pads, and any braking contact surface: never lubricate these. Lubricant on a braking surface reduces grip immediately and requires professional attention.
  • Clutch plates and tyre tread: the same safety logic applies. Do not use.
  • Rubber door seals and weatherstrips: silicone spray is the better choice here. It conditions rubber without causing it to soften or squeak. Wax lubricant is not formulated for this purpose.
  • Seatbelts, airbag components, and child seat anchor points: do not spray near these. Keep them clean and dry only.
  • Electrical contacts and switches: not suitable. Use a dedicated contact cleaner. Wax can insulate contacts or attract fine dirt over time.
  • Engine internals, gearboxes, DPF, EGR, injectors: not applicable. Wax lubricants are only for external moving parts.

On external hinges and locks, wax lubricant is standard maintenance and does not affect your car's warranty. Using it on brake components or inside sealed systems is a different matter, and those situations should be avoided.

How do you apply wax lubricant, and how often?

Bike chain

  1. Start with a clean, dry chain. For heavily soiled chains, first clean with a suitable chain cleaner before applying wax lube. (A full degreasing procedure is a separate topic covered in our knowledge centre.)
  2. Shift to a middle gear and place the bike securely.
  3. Apply a thin, even line of wax lubricant to the inside of the chain while turning the pedals backward.
  4. Let the carrier evaporate briefly, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.

Follow the reapplication interval on the packaging, or after every wet or muddy ride. Use the sound of the chain as your guide: when it starts to sound dry or slightly rough, it is time to reapply.

Car hinges and locks

  1. Wipe away any visible dirt or old residue from the hinge or lock area.
  2. Give a short, targeted spray on the moving joint only.
  3. Open and close the part a few times to work the wax into the mechanism.
  4. Wipe off any excess to prevent buildup and avoid staining nearby trim.

For hinges and locks, reapplying every few months is a reasonable interval, or after a thorough car wash, or whenever squeaks return. A thin coat is enough. More product does not mean better lubrication, and buildup can make mechanisms harder to move over time.

For seized or heavily corroded parts, a penetrating oil usually comes first. Once the part moves freely, you can protect it with wax lubricant.

PTFE spray is also a low-friction dry lubricant and works well for certain precise mechanisms where a very thin, durable film is needed. Multi spray is more of a general penetrating and light-lubricating product, useful in many situations but not as clean-running as wax on a bike chain.

On the question of dry versus wet chain lube: a wax-based (dry) lube runs cleaner and leaves less residue, but needs more frequent reapplication in persistently wet conditions. A wet lube is more durable in heavy rain but tends to attract more dirt. That comparison goes deeper than this page allows; it is worth a separate read if you ride regularly in all weathers.

When should you go to a garage or bike shop instead?

Lubrication is maintenance. It reduces friction and prevents wear, but it does not fix parts that are already damaged or worn past their limit.

  • A hinge, lock, or chain stays noisy or stiff after you have cleaned and lubricated it correctly.
  • You can see visible corrosion, bent parts, or excessive play in hinges, pedals, or drivetrain components.
  • Any brake-related part feels rough, sticks, or behaves differently from normal.
  • Electric windows or a sunroof move slowly, stop partway, or show a fault message.
  • A lock is heavily corroded or seized and does not free up after a small amount of lubricant.
  • You suspect chain stretch, cassette wear, or play in a bearing: these need a mechanic's eye, not a maintenance spray.

If you notice any of these, stop adding lubricant and have a bike shop or garage inspect the part. More product will not help, and in some cases it can mask a problem that needs proper attention.

If the chain sounds dry again within a short distance after reapplication, or a hinge squeaks again within days, that is usually a sign the part needs inspection rather than another coat of wax.
