Which Lindemann product fits your fuel type and problem?
The quickest route to the right choice is matching your fuel type to your symptom or maintenance goal. If symptoms are severe (warning lights, limp mode, heavy smoke), go to the garage boundary section below before adding anything to your tank or oil.
- Diesel, rough running, black smoke, or noticeably higher consumption: Lindemann Total Care Diesel 1L. One-off intensive clean for an already contaminated system.
- Diesel, ongoing preventive use or fuel quality concerns with normal running: Lindemann Diesel Boost. Regular maintenance additive, not a one-off treatment.
- Diesel, DPF warning light or high soot load, but the car still drives normally: Lindemann DPF Cleaner. Added to the diesel tank to support filter regeneration. For a technical explanation of how DPF cleaners work, see the Knowledge Center.
- Petrol, rough idle, stuttering, or suspected injector fouling: Lindemann Total Care Petrol 1L or Lindemann Service Cleaner Benzine.
- Petrol, preventive clean spread across multiple refuels: Lindemann Fuel System Cleaner.
- Petrol hybrid (mild or plug-in), injectors and combustion chamber: Lindemann Total Care Petrol 1L, which is marked as suitable for hybrids. Follow the product label and, as with any drivetrain, go to a garage for real faults rather than relying on an additive.
- High-mileage engine (above 150,000 km) with rising oil consumption or compression loss: Lindemann Worn Engine Treatment. Intended for moderate wear-related symptoms, not a substitute for mechanical repair.
- Normal engine, extra oil protection during the current service interval: Lindemann Engine Performance Treatment 300ml.
- Minor oil seepage at seals or gaskets, no puddles or heavy loss: Lindemann Oil Stop Leak. Acts on seal flexibility in a controlled way; not a fix for cracked or mechanically damaged seals.
- Minor radiator or cooling system seepage: Lindemann Radiator Stop Leak.
- Diesel with SCR system, AdBlue crystallisation concerns: Lindemann Additive for AdBlue alongside Lindemann AdBlue 10L.
- Engine before an oil change, sludge or old oil deposits present: Lindemann Engine Flush. For a full step-by-step guide on engine flush timing, see the Knowledge Center.
The distinction between Total Care Diesel and Diesel Boost matters in practice. Total Care Diesel is an intensive, one-off treatment for a system that already has contamination symptoms. Diesel Boost is a regular maintenance additive for a diesel that runs normally but benefits from consistent fuel quality support. Using both simultaneously is unnecessary.
Is Lindemann safe for your engine: turbos, hybrids, Euro 6, and E10?
E10 petrol and ethanol blends. Lindemann petrol additives are safe for E10 when used as directed. For frequent E10 use, the Ethanol Treatment product provides additional support. Always respect the dosage stated on the label.
Euro 6 and Euro 7 petrol and diesel engines. Fuel and oil additives are compatible with modern injection and emissions systems when dosed correctly. They do not override factory specifications or alter how the emissions system is calibrated.
Turbocharged engines. Lindemann fuel and oil additives are suitable for turbocharged petrol and diesel engines when used as directed. No special precautions are needed for a turbo in normal condition. If the turbo is already showing symptoms, such as whistling, heavy smoke, or a clear loss of response, an additive will not fix it. A garage inspection is the correct next step.
Mild hybrids, full hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. Petrol additives that are explicitly marked for hybrid use, such as Total Care Petrol, are safe to use. Follow the product label and, as with any drivetrain, go to a garage for real faults rather than relying on an additive.
Diesel with DPF and AdBlue. Lindemann DPF Cleaner is added to the diesel tank and is formulated to be safe for diesel particulate filters in normal condition. It is not a fix for a mechanically blocked or damaged DPF. If regeneration plus a cleaner does not clear the warning light, a garage visit is the correct step.
Lindemann AdBlue is ISO 22241 certified AUS32 fluid, the same standard required by all SCR diesel systems. It is a consumable that must be topped up at the correct level for the emissions system to function properly. It is not an additive in the traditional sense. Using non-certified AdBlue risks damaging the SCR catalyst.
Older carbureted petrol engines. Products suitable for older petrol systems are not intended for modern high-pressure direct injection engines. Check the product label for compatibility before use.
Rubber seals, gaskets, and plastics. Lindemann additives are formulated to be safe for seals and plastics when used as directed. Products like Oil Stop Leak act on seal flexibility in a controlled way and are designed to be gentle. They do not degrade rubber or damage gaskets when used at the correct dosage.
Warranty. Lindemann additives are formulated to be safe for use in modern engines and fuel systems. No additive can guarantee warranty protection, but correctly dosed, compatible use in a healthy system does not normally give reasonable grounds for a warranty claim to be denied. If you are uncertain, check your vehicle's service manual for any restrictions on additive use.
How often should you use Lindemann, and how much?
Fuel additives
- Most Lindemann fuel additives are dosed per tank volume. Check the specific product label for the exact dosage range, as it varies by product.
- Adding to a half-full tank is generally fine. The product mixes with whatever fuel is present during driving. If the label states a minimum tank volume, respect that.
- For preventive use with normal commuting and occasional longer trips, check the product label for the recommended interval. Using a product more often than the label indicates does not improve results and is not necessary for a healthy system.
- For short city trips, where the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature, consistent preventive use pays off more than for motorway driving.
Oil additives
- Engine Performance Treatment, Worn Engine Treatment, and Engine Flush are dosed per volume of engine oil. Check the label for the exact ratio for your engine's oil capacity.
Overdose
- A small overshoot on dosage is not an immediate cause for concern, but do not double or triple the recommended amount. More product does not clean better and can place unnecessary stress on the system. Never add multiple strong cleaners to the same tank or oil fill at once.
In a healthy but slightly fouled fuel system, you usually notice the effect of a Lindemann cleaner after one full tank, sometimes two. This can feel like a smoother idle or slightly more consistent throttle response. Larger changes in fuel consumption or visible smoke reduction take longer and depend on how fouled the system was before you started. If you drive mostly short trips, plan at least one longer drive after dosing so the engine reaches full temperature and the product can work properly.
When does Lindemann help, and when should you go to a garage?
Use a Lindemann product if:
- You have a mild rough idle or light stuttering with no warning lights present.
- Fuel consumption has risen slightly but there are no obvious faults.
- Your diesel produces mild black smoke but still drives normally.
- You notice early signs of oil consumption or light seepage, with no puddles under the car and no heavy smoke.
- You want to clean preventively between regular services, or after a professional cleaning, to keep systems clean.
Skip additives and go to a garage if:
- The engine warning light is on and does not clear after a short time.
- The car goes into limp mode, loses power, or will not rev freely.
- There are clear misfires, jerking, or metal noises from the engine.
- Heavy white or blue smoke is present (possible coolant or oil burning).
- Oil loss is rapid, there are puddles under the car, or coolant is visibly dropping.
- There is known mechanical damage: a damaged turbo, failed injectors, or a cracked head.
- The DPF warning light remains on despite regeneration attempts, or the car refuses to regenerate.
Lindemann cleaners can be a sensible first step for mild contamination and preventive maintenance. Workshop-level cleaning, such as manual DPF cleaning, intake cleaning, or injector testing, is needed when problems are persistent, severe, or linked to stored fault codes. Professional cleaning and subsequent Lindemann use can work well together: the workshop addresses the existing problem, and the additive helps keep the system cleaner between services.
Using a cleaner shortly before an MOT or APK inspection can sometimes help with marginal soot or emissions values, but it is not a guarantee of passing. For realistic expectations on additives before an inspection, see the dedicated article in the Knowledge Center.
Can you combine Lindemann products, or mix them with other brands?
Using a Lindemann fuel additive and a Lindemann oil additive in the same maintenance cycle is generally fine, because they work in separate systems. A practical approach is to treat the fuel at a normal refuel and treat the oil at the time of an oil change. Avoid adding multiple strong cleaners to the same system at once: more product does not equal better cleaning and can stress the system unnecessarily.
Lindemann oil additives are generally compatible with modern motor oils of the correct viscosity for your car. That said, never use an additive to bypass your manufacturer's specified oil grade or approval requirements. If you have already used an additive from another brand in the same tank or oil fill, wait until the next refuel or oil change before switching to Lindemann. Mixing formulations from different brands in the same fluid is not recommended, because you cannot predict how the chemistries interact. This is the main practical reason to avoid it, not a warranty issue in itself.
Lindemann for high-mileage cars and specific driving patterns
- High-mileage petrol or diesel engine (above 150,000 km) with moderate oil consumption or compression loss: Worn Engine Treatment is the appropriate starting point. For severe oil consumption accompanied by consistent blue smoke, a garage assessment of piston rings or valve seals is more appropriate than any additive.
- High-mileage engine, fuel system: A one-off treatment with Total Care Diesel or Total Care Petrol, followed by lighter preventive cleaners at the intervals described on the product label, is a reasonable approach for an older engine that still runs well.
- Mostly short city trips: Soot and deposits accumulate faster when the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature. Consistent preventive fuel cleaning, such as Service Cleaner Benzine or Fuel System Cleaner, and an occasional more intensive clean before a longer trip, makes the most sense here.
- Mostly long motorway journeys: Periodic preventive use at the interval stated on the product label is sufficient. Frequent additives are not needed for an engine that regularly reaches and holds operating temperature.
- After professional injector, intake, or DPF cleaning: Using a gentle Lindemann fuel additive at the preventive interval helps keep the system cleaner between services. It does not replace the workshop work; it supports the result of it.
Lindemann products are maintenance tools for clean or lightly fouled systems. Regular use can help prevent carbon build-up and reduce the rate at which EGR and DPF systems foul, but it does not guarantee problems will never occur. For a car with persistent symptoms or stored fault codes, diagnosis always comes first.
